Hodges Charged with Evading Arrest

A McMinnville man who borrowed a car and then tried to outrun the law has been charged with evading arrest.

34 year old Joshua Walter Hodges of Old Post Road, McMinnville is under a $4,500 bond and he will make a court appearance on December 13.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on Friday, November 2 a deputy tried to stop a silver Dodge Stratus on Short Mountain Road for a tail light out but when he turned on his blue lights the car failed to stop. The deputy then activated his siren but the car sped up to 95 miles per hour trying to evade arrest. After the car crossed into Cannon County the officer terminated the pursuit. After a further investigation officers contacted the owner of the car who informed them that he gave Hodges  permission to drive the car and that Hodges was still in possession of it at the time of the pursuit.

42 year old Christopher Daniel Gibbs of Sims Street, Dowelltown is charged with a 4^th offense of driving under the influence, a 4^th offense of driving on a revoked license, and evading arrest. His bond totals $15,000 and he will make a court appearance on December 20

Sheriff Ray said that on Friday, December 7 a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Chevy S-10 with no tail lights. The driver, Gibbs abandoned the truck and tried to flee on foot but he was apprehended. Gibbs had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. His eyes were glassy and his pupils very constricted. Gibbs submitted to but performed poorly on field sobriety tasks. Gibbs already has three prior DUI offenses against him which occurred in 2007, 2011, and 2015. He also has three prior convictions for driving on a revoked license. Gibbs admitted to having consumed suboxone, marijuana, methamphetamine, and a 24 ounce beer earlier in the day.

54 year old Glenda Marie Hendrixson of Petty Road, Smithville is charged with driving under the influence. She has a $1,500 bond and her court date is December 20.

Sheriff Ray said that on Saturday, December 8 a deputy was patrolling on McMinnville Highway when he noticed a vehicle off to the side of the road. Someone was in the driver seat with her head down. He stopped to investigate and found the keys to the automobile in the ignition. The driver, Hendrixson had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her person. She submitted to but performed poorly on field sobriety tasks.

The DeKalb Animal Coalition held its Official Open House Sunday for the new Animal Shelter.

Members of the Board of Directors and staff welcomed visitors and took them on a tour of the shelter. Refreshments were served and visitors may have also noticed the engraved bricks laid on the grounds near the entrance and walkway purchased by shelter supporters in honor  or remembrance of a friend, relative, or pet as a tribute.

The shelter, located on Transfer Station Road behind Tenneco Automotive, has been in operation since November, 2017.

“This is our official open house and the first time we have invited the public in to tour our facility. We are so happy to have had people come out and see what we are doing,” said Marsha Darrah, President of the Coalition Board of Directors.

The shelter currently is home to 37 dogs and cats waiting adoption and with Christmas coming, Shelter Director Megan Moore said it’s a great opportunity for you to take one or more home for the holidays.

“We are working with rescues and doing adoptions. We encourage people to come out. We have a short form for you to fill out. Its an adoption application with general information. We will sit down and talk with you. The animals are spayed and neutered before they leave unless they are less than six months old and then they go out on deposit and you get that deposit back after six months when you get them fixed,” said Moore.

In addition to Director Moore, the shelter is staffed by another employee James Wilkerson. Volunteers are also desired to help through the shelter’s volunteer program.

Crede Colgan, member of the Animal Coalition Board, said he became aware of the organization after his father died four years ago.

“My father was an animal lover and more so as he became older and upon his passing in November of 2014  we had his funeral at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. The funeral director Chad Kirby mentioned to me about how that the DeKalb Animal Coalition was getting started and could use some help so in lieu of flowers we decided to seek donations to the Coalition in his memory,” said Colgan.

After being introduced to the organization, Colgan said he decided to become an active member.

“I was invited to a meeting and met Sue (Puckett) and Marsha (Darrah) and others. I made a donation and ever since then I have been a part of it. They later invited me to become a member of the board and I was grateful. I hope we can do more for this shelter  because it is one of the most wonderful programs to come out of Smithville in a while,” added Colgan

The shelter is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from noon until 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon. The shelter is closed on Wednesday but even after hours the work goes on by the staff caring for the animals and facility.

Santa made another appearance in DeKalb County on Sunday for the Alexandria Christmas Parade.

A small crowd of folks braved a cold drizzle downtown and along Main Street to catch a glimpse of Santa and all the other attractions of the parade.

The parade made its way into town led by Alexandria Police Chief Chris Russell followed by Sheriff Patrick Ray. The Parade also featured floats, the DCHS band, vintage automobiles, farm tractors, four wheelers and motorcycles, fire trucks, Tennessee Division of Forestry and Smoky the Bear, Smithville- DeKalb Rescue Squad, DeKalb EMS, horseback riders, horse drawn wagon, Santa Claus, and more.

In the floats category, the West Main Baptist Church won for their entry “True love was born in a manger and died on a cross”. Second place went to Wilson Bank & Trust.

For best vintage automobiles, Derek Carter took 1^st place for his 1995 Nissan 240sx drift car. Dillon Sullivan received second place for his 1985 Monte Carlo SS.

In the miscellaneous category, Randy Slager won 1^st place and Tommy Hale took 2^nd place.

Drawings were held after the parade for prize giveaways.
