Band Series Part 3: Hunter Davis

Our band series ends today on Hunter Davis, a senior flute and piccolo player with the D-C-H-S Fighting Tiger Band.  Davis, the daughter of Chad and Danielle Troyer, is part of the woodwind section that performs music from “The Phantom of the Opera” this marching season.

“It’s my favorite musical, so I was really excited about it,” says Davis.

Hunter started the marching band as a freshman student at Smith County High School and then transferred to DeKalb County her sophomore year.

Hunter was one of three band seniors recognized at the final home football game of the season Friday night.

“My mom and grandparents are here,” Davis told WJLE during halftime. “My dad woke up. It’s actually 3 a.m. in Kuwait.  He woke up to watch us.”

Hunter first started in music when she was in sixth grade.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to play, and I thought the flute sounded really pretty.  A lady at my grandparents’ church actually played it. I liked how it sounded. During my freshman year, my best friend was a junior. She got band queen and made me march piccolo to have that sound.”

What does Davis enjoy about being a member of the high school band?

“The sense of family, going to different places that I never knew existed, and I really like the football games, making new friends, and seeing kids start when they’re in sixth grade and watching them mature as they go through.”

After graduating in May, Hunter plans to major in Chemistry as part of her pre-med pathway at Tennessee Tech. One day she wants to be a Pediatrician. In the meantime, she doesn’t want her interest in music to end. She wants to either do marching or concert band at Tech.

Parents and kids looking to trick or treat Wednesday will find plenty of opportunities downtown Smithville and at the County Complex on South Congress Boulevard.

It’s the annual City of Smithville and the Police Department’s “Trick or Treat Halloween Event” Wednesday, October 31 from noon until 5:00 p.m.

Some offices in the DeKalb County Courthouse, Smithville City Hall, Smithville Police Department, Justin Potter Library, and participating businesses downtown will have candy and special treats for the children. This year, offices in and businesses around the County Complex will also be participating

Look for the stores and offices with a picture of an orange pumpkin on their windows. Maps are also available at the police department and Justin Potter Library to show parents which businesses will be taking part in the event.

Meanwhile, the Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a “Best Costume Contest” for downtown businesses and offices. Take pictures with your phone and send them to Suzanne Williams at 615-464-7760 by 1:00 p.m. on October 31. First, second, and third place winners will be presented a “Halloween on the Square Best Costume Award”, media recognition, and bragging rights.

The Smithville Volunteer Fire Department will have special treats for children Wednesday, October 31 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Stop by for candy and a tour of the Smithville Fire Hall and the fire trucks. Meet with Smithville Fire Chief Charlie Parker and the Smithville Fire Department Volunteers.

Artist and craft lovers have one more day to take a tour of the area’s finest studios.

The 19^th annual Off the Beaten Path Studio Tour began Friday and ends today (Sunday). Twenty nine artists in DeKalb and Cannon Counties are opening their studios at fourteen stops along the route to demonstrate craft mediums and offer handcrafted shopping opportunities. Stop by any or all of them today (Sunday) from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Jack Loeb, at stop #3 on the route, will have his painting studio open today at 2653 Jacobs Pillar Road

Loeb uses strong bold colors and expressive brush strokes to convey a sense of joy and excitement in his paintings.

His major in college was quickly changed after taking his first art class.  The pursuit of painting had begun!

Jack is a retired art educator with over 37 years of experience teaching elementary through college level art.  He taught with the Department of Defense Schools in Germany for 22 years, and worked as an Arts and Crafts Director in the Azores.

While living in Europe, Jack had the opportunity to see original works by Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, and other masters.  This experience has greatly influenced his work throughout his painting career.

He now lives in Smithville, TN, where he can be found in his studio daily.  He is still pursuing his love of painting.
