Attendance Policy Adopted for County Solid Waste Employees

Showing up for work!

To ensure that employees of the DeKalb County Solid Waste Department scheduled for work show up on time or contact their supervisor if they can’t show up for work, the county commission has adopted an attendance policy for the department.

The action was taken Monday night during the regular monthly meeting of the commission at the request of County Mayor Matt Adcock and Solid Waste Director James Goff.

While there is already a county wide personnel policy which includes solid waste employees, County Mayor Adcock said the policy does not include rules about attendance. The department also lacks a policy and procedure manual. Efforts are underway to establish such a manual for the solid waste department which will include a provision for attendance. In the meantime, Adcock said he and Goff thought it best that the county commission enact the attendance rules first.

“In the past there were no rules of enforcement to discipline employees for not showing up to work and according to Director Goff, the Solid Waste Department is having some attendance issues. Some employees have not been coming to work, nor even taking the time to call and explain to management that they will not be there so that someone can be scheduled to cover their absence. This new attendance policy will give Director Goff the leverage he needs to get his employees to work,” said County Mayor Adcock.

The attendance policy includes discipline based on a points system. One absence occurrence will have a value of one point. A tardy will be 1/2 point. A no call, no show will be four points. A point will remain on the individual’s record for 6 months from the date that the point was assigned. After 6 months, any points accumulated would be dropped from an employee’s record provided there are no further policy attendance violations.

At four points, an employee would be issued a verbal warning. Five points would require a written warning and at six points the employee would be terminated.

Donny Green, County Executive Director of the DeKalb-Cannon County Farm Service Agency (FSA), says the 2022 DeKalb-Cannon FSA County Committee election results have been approved by the Tennessee FSA State Committee.

For Local Administrative Area # 3, Bart Lay was elected to serve as Committee Member. Shawn Puckett was elected to serve as the 1st Alternate for LAA # 3. Elected members began their terms on January 1, 2023.

R.V. Billings, Jr. was honored for his service to the Farm Service Agency, both as a county executive director and as a county committee member, for over 43 years of cumulative service. Mr. Billings’ contributions to DeKalb County farmers and agriculture are unparalleled, and his influences and leadership will benefit many generations to come.

The DeKalb-Cannon FSA County Committee met on January 10, 2023 to conduct its Organizational Meeting. For 2023, the Committee selected Robert “Bob” Melton as the Chairperson, and Terry Young as the Vice-Chairperson. Jimmy Womack, Bart Lay, and Grant Williams serve as members of the Committee. Mary Sanders serves as the Committee Advisor.

The Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 8:30 a.m. at the DeKalb-Cannon County USDA Service Center located at 647 Bright Hill Rd.

Green says that the DeKalb-Cannon FSA County Committee and office staff wish to express their appreciation to voters in LAA # 3 who participated in the election by voting and returning their ballots. “The local County Committees are a very important part of Farm Service Agency’s program delivery and administrative processes,” added Green.

DeKalb West School announced the Students of the Month for January on Tuesday (January 24). Selected for the honor were the following students: Maddie Ellis, PreK; Maddy Lattimore, Kindergarten; Kye Carter, 1st grade; Mason Checchi, 2nd grade; Braylin Niffen, 3rd grade; Holden Leiser, 4th grade; Hailey Brown, 5th grade; Kate Pistole, 6th grade; Porter Hancock, 7th grade; Wyatt Young, 8th grade. Teachers choose students for the top honor each month based on academics, character, and other positive traits.

Principal Sabrina Farler also announced that 8th grade teacher Dwayne Blair is the Teacher of the Month. Mr. Blair joined DWS this year to teach Math and Science after working in the Wilson County School System.
