Burger King Restaurant Coming to Smithville

Burger King is coming to Smithville!

The location is 200 East Broad Street at the former site of Kent’s Texaco and later DeKalb Tire & Service at the corner of Highway 70 & 56.

“The Smithville Planning Commission met last Monday, July 8 and unanimously approved a site plan review as required by our zoning ordinance. They have completed and turned in their building permit, but we have not received word yet on when construction will begin,” said City of Smithville Administrator Hunter Hendrixson.

The proposed development by GPS Hometown Hospitality, based in Atlanta Georgia, consists of constructing a new Burger King restaurant with associated drives and utilities. The site lies on the northeast corner of East Broad Street and Congress Boulevard and is bound by Smithville Town Cemetery to the north, Bright Street to the east, East Broad Street to the south, and Congress Boulevard to the west. The parcel was previously developed with an auto repair shop and a house on-site.

The engineer for the project is Integrity Engineering & Development Services, Inc, based in Dacula Georgia.

GPS Hospitality operates more than 400 Burger King restaurants in 13 states, has remodeled nearly 200 and built almost 50 new restaurants over the past 11 years.

Showing patriotic pride!

Acting on a request from a concerned citizen Steven Cantrell, Dewain Hendrixson of DeKalb County Ace Hardware, at his own expense, recently installed a light on top of his store across from the county complex which is directed at the American Flag on a pole outside the complex so it can be seen at night.

“He (Cantrell) said he asked the county to shine a light on the flag and they wouldn’t do it so he asked if I would put a light on my building and shine it on that flag and I said sure, I would be happy to,” said Hendrixson.

County Mayor Matt Adcock said lights have been ordered for all county buildings where flags are displayed including the county complex, courthouse, library, community centers, and at the EMS (already installed).

In April, Cantrell addressed the County Commission concerning the lack of US Flag Protocol and Flying the flag at night on County buildings, especially at the complex.

Cantrell, a veteran who is now retired and has an extensive military career background, said he took notice of the flags being flown at night without the proper lighting and thought he should bring it to the attention of the commission.

A man who allegedly slapped his 9-year-old stepson and threatened the child’s mother was arrested last Tuesday, July 9.

35-year-old Ian Michael Wilson of Neil Drive, Smithville is charged with domestic assault and child abuse or neglect. His bond is $7,500 and he will be in court July 25.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on July 9 Wilson allegedly knowingly and repeatedly slapped his 9-year-old stepson in the facial area causing redness as the child was crying and begging for him to stop. Wilson appeared to be under the influence.

According to Sheriff Ray, Wilson also allegedly placed his wife in fear of imminent bodily injury by verbally threatening and throwing objects at her while she was upstairs at their residence with their minor child.

36-year-old Jason Eugene Phillips of Cookeville is charged with public intoxication. His bond is $1,500 and he will be in court July 25.

Sheriff Ray said that on July 11 a deputy was dispatched to Cookeville Highway due to a suspicious person observed stumbling on the edge of the roadway. Upon arrival the officer stopped and spoke with the individual, Phillips who smelled of alcohol. According to the officer, Phillips’ speech was slurred, and his eyes were bloodshot and glossy. He admitted to having consumed alcohol earlier that day.

39-year-old Andrea Colleen Claspell of Green Hill Road, Smithville is charged with aggravated assault (2 counts), aggravated burglary, vandalism, driving under the influence (2nd offense), driving on a revoked license, and violation of the implied consent law. Her bond totals $56,000 and she will be in court July 25.

Sheriff Ray said that on July 11 a deputy was dispatched to Green Hill Road due to an assault. Upon arrival, he spoke with homeowners who reported that Claspell, who appeared to be under the influence, had taken possession of a Toyota Tacoma and driven through their yard and into the roadway where it got stuck in a ditch. The vehicle had extensive damage. The officer found Claspell holding a bottle of wine walking down the road. While speaking with Claspell, the officer found her speech to be slurred and she was unsteady on her feet. Claspell admitted to having consumed alcohol and driving the vehicle. She refused to submit to a blood draw. Her previous DUI offense was December 10, 2020.

Sheriff Ray said the investigation revealed that prior to her arrest, Claspell had allegedly entered an occupied dwelling with intent to commit an assault, then struck a man there in the face causing him to be checked out by DeKalb EMS. Claspell then allegedly caused damage to personal property outside the home with her vehicle by running over the owner’s bicycles, kids’ toys, and a trampoline and driving toward a woman placing her in fear of serious bodily injury.
