Twenty-nine seeking a seat on the County Commission

Twenty-nine candidates will be in contention for one of the 14 seats on the county commission in 2022 including 9 Democrats, 17 Republicans, and 3 Independents.

Both the Democratic and Republican Parties will have Primaries on May 3 to selection nominees (2 from each of the 7 districts in the county) to run in the August 4 DeKalb County General Election. Two commissioners from each district will be elected in August.

Today at noon (February 17) was the qualifying deadline.

The candidates have met the signature requirements to be placed on the ballot pending approval from the respective political parties. Since the May elections are primary elections, the state political parties have the final say in vetting candidates.

In District 1, Incumbent Julie Young will be running unopposed in the May 3 Democratic Primary while Bennett Armstrong and Tom Chandler will be unopposed in the May 3 GOP Primary. Independent candidate Daniel Cripps will be on the ballot with Young, Armstrong, and Chandler in the August General Election. Two are to be elected in August

In District 2, Incumbent Myron Rhody will be unopposed in the May 3 Democratic Primary while Incumbent Sabrina Farler and Jim Pearson will be unopposed on the May 3 GOP Primary. All three will be on the ballot in the August General Election. Two are to be elected in August

In District 3, Incumbents Susannah Cripps Daughtry and Jenny Trapp will face opposition from Jack E. Barton, III in the May 3 Democratic Primary (two Democratic candidates to be nominated) while Tim Perricone will be unopposed in the May 3 GOP Primary. The Democratic and Republican nominees will be on the ballot in August along with independent candidate Tony Luna. Two are to be elected in August.

In District 4, Incumbent Janice Fish Stewart will be unopposed in the May 3 Democratic Primary while the Republican Primary on May 3 will have three candidates, Tony L. “Cully” Culwell, Dan Delacruz, and Greg Matthews (two GOP candidates to be nominated). The Democratic and Republican nominees will be on the ballot in August along with independent candidate Wayne Cantrell. Two are to be elected in August.

In District 5, there are no Democratic or Independent candidates, but five persons are running in the May 3 GOP Primary including Incumbent Jerry Adcock, Larry L, Green, Joshua Holloway, Charles Glynn Merriman, and Steve Randall Merriman, Sr. (two GOP candidates to be nominated) The nominees will be unopposed in the August 4 General Election.

In District 6, Incumbent Jeff Barnes and Danny McGinnis will be running unopposed in the May 3 Democratic Primary. Two candidates are running unopposed in the May 3 GOP Primary including Justin Douglas Adcock and Doug Stephens. The Democratic and Republican nominees will be on the ballot in August. Two are to be elected in August.

In District 7, Incumbent Bruce Malone and Timothy Brian Reynolds will be unopposed in the May 3 GOP primary. Democratic Incumbent Beth Pafford is unopposed in the May 3 Democratic Primary. The Democratic and Republican nominees will be on the ballot in August. Two are to be elected in August.




August General Election to feature two contested school board races

There will be two contested Board of Education races in 2022 but not until the August 4 DeKalb County General Election.

Voters in district 1, 2, 3, 4, & 7 will elect a school board member. The terms are for 4 years.

Today at noon (February 17) was the qualifying deadline.

The candidates have met the signature requirements to be placed on the ballot pending approval from the respective political parties. Since the May elections are primary elections, the state political parties have the final say in vetting candidates.

There are no Democratic or Republican candidates for the Board of Education in District 1 but Incumbent Danny Parkerson will be running unopposed as an Independent for re-election in the August 4 General Election.

Incumbent school board member Alan Hayes will be unopposed in the May 3 GOP Primary in District 2 as well as the August General Election

Incumbent school board member Jim Beshearse in District 3 will be unopposed in the May 3 GOP Primary as well as the August 4 General Election.

Three people will be in the race in August to succeed Incumbent school board member Kate Miller in District 4 who is not seeking re-election. Scott Little, in the Democratic Primary on May 3, and Eric Ervin in the GOP May 3 Primary, are unopposed but they will be challenged by Independent Tony Poss in the August 4 General Election.

Incumbent school board member Shaun Tubbs in District 7 will be running for re-election as an Independent in the August 4 General Election. He will face opposition from Republican Ryan Mollinet who is unopposed in the May 3 GOP primary.




Season ends for Tigers in District Tournament at Cumberland County

The DeKalb County High School Tigers were ousted from the District 7-3A basketball tournament at Crossville Wednesday night losing to the Cumberland County Jets 67 to 39.

The Tigers end the season at 13-14 while the Jets improve to 14-13 and will advance to the semi-finals of the tournament at Tennessee Tech to play White County Friday night, February 18 at 5:30 p.m.

The Tigers trailed 13 to 5 after the 1st period, 31 to 15 at halftime, and 54 to 26 after the 3rd period before losing to the Jets 67 to 39.

Conner Close scored 19, Elishah Ramos 11, Nathaniel Crook 4, Jordan Young 3, and Brayden Antoniak 2.
