DCHS Tiger Soccer Team to Host Play Day Saturday, March 7 (Listen to WJLE’s Tiger Talk Here)

The DeKalb County High School Tiger Soccer team will host a Pre-Season Play Day Saturday and fans are urged to come out to see their team in action.

Tiger Talk Soccer March 6

Competition will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until around 4 p.m. featuring the Tigers along with Macon County, Cannon County, and Westmoreland.

The regular season starts Tuesday, March 10 with a district match at Stone Memorial in Crossville starting at 6:30 p.m. followed by a junior varsity game.

Tiger Coach Dylan Kleparek is about to embark on his 18th season and he couldn’t be more excited. Although the program lost 12 veteran players from last year due to graduation, Coach K expects the returning players to work hard and be competitive.

“We have 23 kids on the team this year which is a low number for us but we have some quality players. We have a good group of seniors who are good leaders and hard working guys and some juniors with a lot of experience who will help us out too. Probably our top two seniors are Bill Miller and Alan Munoz. Those guys have a lot of playing time with the high school team and travel soccer. We also have two people with goalie experience including Alex Soto who played Junior varsity last year and Luke Jenkins who played as a freshman,” he said.

Coach K said while Cumberland County may be the team to beat in the district again this season he expects his team to be competitive.

“Traditionally we have a very strong district. Cumberland County went to state last year and they are probably at the top of the district right now. Livingston had a young team last year but they were very strong so I expect them to be a tough team. Stone Memorial usually fields a pretty tough team as well but they lost quite a few players and they have a new coach so they are an unknown right now. Upperman had a very young team last year with no seniors so they will have everyone back this year and their coach will be in his second year. I think our district as a whole will be pretty competitive so we will have our work cut out for us,” said Coach K.

The Tigers will have a soccer field they can call their own this season. The new complex was actually completed in time for the Lady Tiger soccer season last fall.

“It’s a phenomenal field and a great advancement for our program. We are grateful for the opportunity to have this. We now have a lot more space to work with and a place to call home,” added Coach K.

The 2020 DeKalb County Teacher of the Year is Teresa Jones, a 7th grade math and science teacher at DeKalb Middle School.

Jones received the “John Isabell Memorial Award” Thursday night during the 13th Annual Teacher of the Year banquet at the Smithville First Baptist Church Life Enrichment Center.

The award and a check for $150 was presented to Jones by Roy Nelson Pugh of Liberty State Bank, a sponsor of the banquet, along with Director of Schools Patrick Cripps and Lori Isabell. John Isabell who passed away in 2014 was Lori’s husband and the DeKalb County Teacher of the Year award is named in his honor. John Isabell was a long time educator and former President of the DeKalb County Education Association.

Jones, who is in her 18th year as a teacher, was among five local educators who were recognized during the banquet for being chosen by peers as “Teacher of the Year” at their schools. The others were second grade teacher Tiffany Cowart at Smithville Elementary School; fourth grade teacher Debra Poteete at Northside Elementary School; Tonya Ellis, a kindergarten teacher at DeKalb West School; and Rebecca Miller, a Family and Consumer Science teacher at DeKalb County High School.

“I feel very privileged and I am definitely blessed. This is my 18th year of teaching and I love it. I am originally from Kentucky but my family started out in Carthage and I worked previously in Smith County for 15 years before coming here.  I have been in DeKalb County now for three years. I love DeKalb Middle School and the family atmosphere there,” Jones said.

“Ms Jones is a very caring and dedicated teacher and goes above and beyond. She does anything and everything you ask her with a positive attitude. She does a phenomenal job in and out of her classroom involving herself for student achievement whether it be academic or sports related. She gives up her planning to assist struggling students to understand new skills or just to provide extra clarification. She works diligently with students in after school programs and it is very obvious that her passion is the students. It is an honor to have Ms Jones as part of our staff,” said DeKalb Middle School Principal Lacey Foutch.

Administrators introduced the Teachers of the Year at their schools, remarked on how they deserved the honor, and presented them with a school bell award.

School board members attending were Alan Hayes and Doug Stephens.

If you missed the open house Monday for the Tiny House you have another opportunity.

An open house is scheduled for Saturday, March 7 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at DCHS just prior to the Ford Drive 4 UR School fundraiser for the Tigerette softball program which will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

You are invited to stop by to view the Tiny House recently completed by students in the DCHS Residential and Commercial Construction Class. It is located near the Vocational School.

The Tiny House is now for sale and sealed bids are being accepted. The minimum bid has been established at $22,600. The Board of Education will open bids at the next regular monthly meeting on Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Ernest Ray Education Center.

The 8’ x 24’ Tiny House stands up to 13 feet and 6 inches and sets on a modified trailer that can be anchored or moved from place to place.

Accommodations in the Tiny House, although compact include a living room, kitchenette, bathroom, and sleeping space.

Specific features are as follows:
● Mobility by use of a trailer
● Central heat and air unit
● Cooktop
● Solid wood cherry cabinets
● Loft bedroom
● Cherry laminate flooring
● Bathroom with shower
● Metal roof
● Cedar wood siding ( stained and finished)
