US Census Bureau to Contact You by Mid-March for the 2020 Count

In mid-March, homes across the country will begin receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail.
The 2020 Census counts every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories.
The count is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency. The 2020 Census counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire—online, by phone, or by mail.
The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data.
The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and they are used to draw congressional and state legislative districts.
It’s also in the Constitution: Article 1, Section 2, mandates that the country conduct a count of its population once every 10 years. The 2020 Census will mark the 24th time that the country has counted its population since 1790.
Counting every person living in the United States is a massive undertaking, and efforts begin years in advance. Here’s a look at some of the key dates along the way:
2020
March 12 – 20: Households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail.
March 30 – April 1: The Census Bureau will count people who are experiencing homelessness over these three days. As part of this process, the Census Bureau counts people in shelters, at soup kitchens and mobile food vans, on the streets, and at non-sheltered, outdoor locations such as tent encampments.
April 1: Census Day is observed nationwide. By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When you respond to the census, you’ll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020.
April: Census takers will begin visiting college students who live on campus, people living in senior centers, and others who live among large groups of people. Census takers also begin conducting quality check interviews to help ensure an accurate count.
May – July: Census takers will begin visiting homes that haven’t responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted.
December: The Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law.
The U.S. Census Bureau is ramping up its national recruiting efforts to hire up to 500,000 temporary, part-time census takers for the 2020 Census in communities across the country to reach its goal of more than 2 million applicants.
The positions offer competitive pay, flexible hours, paid training, and weekly paychecks. To determine the pay rate in a specific area, learn more about these positions, or apply for one of the temporary jobs, visit 2020census.gov/jobs.
Anyone age 18 and older, such as recent high school graduates, college students, veterans, retirees, military spouses, seasonal workers and people who are bilingual are highly encouraged to apply. People who already have jobs and want to earn extra income evenings and weekends are also encouraged to apply. The selection process begins this month, with paid training occurring in March and April. After paid training, most positions work between May and early July.
DCFD Lieutenant Dusty Johnson Back to Back Winner of Liberty State Bank Officer of Year Award

Dustin Johnson, a Lieutenant of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department, has repeated as the Liberty State Bank Officer of the Year.
Johnson received the award during Saturday night’s annual department awards dinner at the County Complex.
Rhonda Caplinger of Liberty State Bank and DCFD Chief Donny Green made the presentation.
This award goes to an officer of the county fire department who serves at the rank of Lieutenant or higher. Judges from the Spring 2019 Citizens’ Fire Academy scored the nominations based upon the following considerations: Training participation, incident response, and community service.
“In addition to his routine Lieutenant duties, Dusty serves as the Fire Prevention/Safety Officer and does a tremendous job planning, coordinating, and installing free smoke alarms in our communities. In 2019, he and his team installed 428 smoke alarms in homes across DeKalb County. For 2019, Dusty made 100% of his monthly training drills while also completing other outside training courses. When it comes to incident responses, he is consistently among the top achievers,” said Chief Green.
“If you know Duty, you know he unselfishly sacrifices his time for community service. As a member of the DeKalb Emergency Services Association, he played a big role in helping plan, prepare, and deliver meals to the needy last Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. Dusty also serves our community in his role as Captain of the Smithville/DeKalb County Rescue Squad,” added Chief Green.
“Leadership is not a title; it’s an action. Dusty’s leadership makes the DeKalb County Fire Department better and we are proud to honor Lieutenant Johnson as the Liberty State Bank 2019 Officer of the Year,” said Caplinger.
First Ever First Bank Fire Station of the Year Award Goes to Four Seasons

The DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department’s newest station has been recognized with a new award.
The Four Seasons Station, which just opened a few months ago, has been honored with the first ever First Bank Station of the Year Award.
Casey Midgett of First Bank and DCFD Lieutenant Kristie Johnson presented the award during the department’s annual banquet Saturday night at the County Complex.
“This award goes to one of the 12 stations in the department based upon the following criteria: Station/equipment maintenance, Submission of monthly maintenance check lists, and Station Commander or station representative attendance at the monthly officers’ meetings,” said Lieutenant Johnson.
“We certainly want to recognize all stations that have demonstrated pride in making the county-wide department accountable and ready to respond. However, we especially want to recognize a station that has outstanding achievement in meeting the criteria for this award,” said Midgett.
