Smithville Head Start Center to Host Open House October 21

The L.B.J. & C. Smithville Head Start Center will be hosting an Open House on Monday, October 21 from 1-4 p.m.
Special fun activities will be available for the kids including inflatables and face painting and refreshments will be served.
“We will have vendors here with booths and displays to provide families information including a Wildlife Museum (lean about local wildlife), Blood Assurance Bloodmobile (donate blood), Imagination Library ( sign up for free books), Local Fire Department (explore the fire apparatus), TENNderCare (information on insurance),CCR &R (child development resources), Health Department/Children Special Services, (get your flu shot), ACTS (mental health resources), Agriculture Extension (health nutrition), TN Reconnect (education resources), Health Connect (health information), Fast Pace Urgent Care (medical resources), Genesis House (domestic violence resource) Stephens Center/Healthier Beginnings (information for new teenage mothers), Woodmen of the World (children fingerprinting),T.O.P.S (resources for migrant workers), TN Voices for children, Cotton Candy Booth, Face Painting, Prizes, Bounce House, Popcorn Booth, and the DeKalb Animal Coalition (adopt a pet),” said Cathy Shehane, Director of the Smithville Head Start Center.
The staff and parents are looking forward to showing their center and the children’s arts and crafts.
“We serve four classrooms of 74 three and four year old children with school readiness skills to prepare them for kindergarten. Our staff consists of 14 people,” said Shehane.
Head Start provides children with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically.
“We invite families and the community, including public officials, business, and civic leaders to stop by during our open house to see what we do,” added Shehane.
The center is located at 118 Kimberly Lane.
Tiger Fall Brawl Coming Saturday

The annual Tiger Fall Brawl 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament is Saturday, October 5 at the DCHS and DeKalb Middle School gyms featuring more than 100 games starting at 10 a.m.
Championship games will be played between 6-9pm.
Male and Female Divisions
Division 1- Grades 4th-5th
Division 2-Grades 6th-8th
Division 3-Grades 9th-10th
Division 4- Grades 11th-12th
Division 5-OPEN
It will be a fun day, with concessions available at both gyms.
The admission is $5 for ALL DAY!

Anna Chew Wins District Golf Tournament

DCHS senior Anna Chew showed why she was selected District 6 golfer of the year Monday.
Chew won the district tournament by eight strokes. She shot 73 at the Golden Eagle Golf Course in Cookeville to crush the other 16 golfers.
Anna advances to the Region 3, large school tournament on Monday, October 7 also at the Golden Eagle Golf Course. If successful there, Anna will advance to the TSSAA large school state championship, October 15 & 16 at Willowbrook Golf Course in Manchester.
The boys team finished 10th at the district tournament. They were led by Seniors Jadyn Young and Justin Washer. Also, swinging into action for the boys were Jake Ramsey, Eli Cantrell, and Elijah Hensley. This was the last golf match of the season for the boys.
