Another prisoner who broke out of the DeKalb County Jail last November and was captured a short time later appeared for sentencing in DeKalb County Criminal Court on Monday, July 23

Judge David Patterson presided.

39 year old Jack Mullican, Jr. entered a plea to escape and in a separate case for aggravated burglary. He received a two year sentence for the escape and five years for the burglary to run consecutively for a total of seven years. He must serve two years at 30% for the escape but the remaining five years will be suspended to supervised probation. He was given jail credit of 259 days.

Mullican and two other inmates, 33 year old Bryon Ray Gibbs and 26 year old Daniel Trey Hamilton broke out of the jail annex on Tuesday night, November 21, 2017. They made their escape from the back of the jail annex through a door they jimmied open.

Mullican was captured Wednesday morning, November 22 after being found in an underground water drain near Mapco Express. He became trapped there after making his escape.

Gibbs was spotted in Alexandria the following Saturday, November 25 and with the help of bystanders, he was taken into custody by Alexandria Police Officer Josh Arnold. After being confronted, Gibbs resisted and began fighting with Arnold. Citizens who witnessed the scene came to the aid of the officer to help subdue Gibbs. Deputies and detectives of the Sheriff’s Department also responded to provide assistance. Gibbs was charged by Alexandria Police with resisting arrest and aggravated assault.

Hamilton was arrested in Fort Myers, Florida Tuesday, November 28 after being involved in a traffic accident there.

Gibbs appeared in criminal court on Tuesday, July 17 and entered a plea to escape, aggravated assault (of an Alexandria Police Officer) and aggravated burglary (separate incident). He received a two year sentence for the escape to serve in the Tennessee Department of Correction. Gibbs also got a four year sentence in each of the other two cases on TDOC probation. The terms are to run consecutively. He was given jail credit from November 25, 2017 to July 17, 2018.

Webb Earns Eagle Scout Court of Honor

Smithville Boy Scout Troop 347 honored Thomas Hunt Webb at the Eagle Scout Court of Honor on July 24 at Northside Elementary School. The ceremony was held under the roof of the new 20-foot by 30-foot pavilion that will be used as an outdoor classroom for N-E-S. Webb was responsible for that development from initiation to completion as his Eagle Scout project.

“I’ve definitely learned more about leadership skills and responsibility,” Webb told WJLE about his years in scouting and his Eagle project in particular. “I learned how to make a plan and put it into action and see it through.”

“A lot of my family has been in the program,” Webb told WJLE. “My dad [Alan Webb] was an Eagle Scout, and my brother [Anderson] was an Eagle Scout. It was sort of my turn.”

Members of Troop 347 rededicated Webb with the Scout Oath and Law.

“To achieve the Eagle Scout rank, a candidate must pass through all the ranks of scouting,” Dr. William Sherwood, Scoutmaster of Troop 347 told the crowd. “Each has required skills, merit badges, service hours and leadership development requirements.”

“In just a few short years, Thomas has undergone a miraculous transformation—from someone who struggled to memorize the Oath and Law to someone who lives those words, from someone who wanted to go camping to someone who’s been camping many times, from someone who needed to be led to someone who can lead others,” Sherwood said.

Representative Terri Lynn Weaver presented Webb with two flags that had flown over the state capitol in his honor along with a special proclamation. Weaver said she always leaves an Eagle Scout awards ceremony inspired to do better.

“The reason why I loved to go to these is, as I said earlier, just the way the community wraps around our Boy Scouts …and how everybody really works and zeroes in on helping these young men reach their goal and forge that character.” Representative Weaver said. “You know the word forged means you have to work at it. You have to chisel. You have to build, and that’s so vital in order for these young men to grow up to be the quality men that they end up becoming.”

Scoutmaster Sherwood presented Webb with his Eagle Scout Award. His mother, Lora, pinned the Eagle medal on her son’s uniform while his dad pinned the Eagle Scout lapel pin to Webb’s collar. In return, Thomas bestowed pins to his parents in recognition to their efforts on his behalf.

A 50 year old McMinnville man was airlifted after a near head-on crash Thursday on Highway 56 south near Evins Mill Nursery.

Homer Sharp was flown by a helicopter ambulance to Vanderbilt Hospital.

According to Trooper William Jackson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Sharp was traveling south on Highway 56 in a red BMW when his car was struck by a 2004 Chevy Colorado pickup truck driven by 31 year old Victor Santos of Smithville.

Santos was traveling north on Highway 56 when a car stopped in front of him to make a turn. Santos slowed to avoid a collision with the car and then swerved to the left but crossed into the lane of Sharp.

Santos had minor injuries and was taken by family members to Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital. The helicopter ambulance landed near the scene to fly out Sharp.

Santos was cited for failure to exercise due care.

Members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department, Sheriff’s Department, and EMS were also on the scene.
