October is National Chiropractic Health Month

Dr. Robert R. Atnip and DeKalb County are joining chiropractic physicians nationwide this October during National Chiropractic Health Month to help raise awareness of non-drug approaches to pain management in the face of the U.S. opioid epidemic.

County Mayor Matt Adcock signed a proclamation Thursday accompanied by Dr. Atnip and his wife Guylene.

The proclamation is as follows:

WHEREAS, About 20 percent of adults in the United States – one in five – experience chronic pain, which is lasting more than three months.

WHEREAS New cases of chronic pain occur more frequently among adults than new cases of other common chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

WHEREAS, In the U.S., musculoskeletal conditions – a common cause of chronic pain – result in more than 130 million healthcare visits annually, making them the No. 1 reason people visit their doctors.

WHEREAS, Low back pain, which ranks among the most common forms of chronic pain, has been one of the leading reasons why people are prescribed opioids; and the number of people worldwide living with back pain is projected to increase by 36% to 843 million over the next 30 years.

WHEREAS, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in four patients who receive prescription opioids long term for non-cancer pain struggle with addiction.

WHEREAS The American College of Physicians’ low-back pain treatment guidelines promote the use of non-invasive, non-drug approaches such as spinal manipulation as a first line of defense against back pain, before the use of pain medications and surgery.

WHEREAS CDC’s 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids promotes “diverse approaches and varied pain management solutions” and specifically encourages use of non-opioid/nonpharmacological therapies as a first line of treatment against subacute and chronic pain.

WHEREAS Doctor of Chiropractic play a key role in helping patients manage pain and lessen their reliance on prescription pain medications with their evidence-based, patient-centered non-drug approach.

WHEREAS, With the theme “Chiropractic: Relieve, Restore, Resume,” National Chiropractic Health Month 2023 reminds citizens of DeKalb County that non-drug treatments for low back, neck, and joint pain, such as spinal manipulation and other chiropractic services, can help relieve pain and restore
joint function, helping people to resume their lives and the activities that matter most.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that DeKalb County officially joins with the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and Tennessee Chiropractic Association (TCA) in proclaiming the month of October 2023 as National Chiropractic Health Month




Murfreesboro Man Accused of Assaulting and Shooting at Woman to Appear in Court Next Week

A Murfreesboro man arrested last month for allegedly shooting at a woman in the parking lot of a Smithville convenience store will answer to the charges in court next week.

24-year-old Elijah Malik Walton of Murfreesboro was picked up on September 4 for aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

According to Chief Mark Collins, Smithville Police were summoned to Bizee Mart in reference to a shooting that had occurred. Officers spoke with the victim who reported that Walton had shot at her. During the investigation it was discovered that Walton and the victim had gotten into an argument in Murfreesboro and she left. Later, Walton located the victim getting gas at Bizee Mart and an altercation occurred with him striking her in the face. Once she got into her vehicle and started to drive away, Walton pulled a gun and shot at her, placing the people at the convenience store in harm’s way also. Warrants were taken for Walton and he was taken into custody later.

Walton is under a $12,500 bond and his court date is October 26.




WJLE’s Fearless Forecasters College Football Talk Show Airs Today (Thursday) at 4:30 p.m.

Jared Davis has taken over the top spot among WJLE’s Fearless Forecasters picking college football winners seven weeks into the season.

Jared has a record of 79-26 followed by Dewain Hendrixson at 77-28, Grant James of the James Gang, Scott Goodwin, and Ricky Atnip each at 75-30, John Pryor 74-31, Scott Brown 73-32, and Darrell Gill of the Gill Gang and Chad Kirby each at 71-34.

For the week, Jared Davis and Scott Brown each had the best record at 13-2, followed by John Pryor 12-3, Scott Goodwin and Dewain Hendrixson each at 11-4, Darrell Gill, Ricky Atnip, and Chad Kirby each at 10-5, and Grant James 8-7.

Three Fearless Forecasters hit their underdog picks last week. Darrell Gill added 6.5 points to his total with NIU’s win over Ohio 23-13. Ricky Atnip picked up 9.5 points as Iowa beat Wisconsin 15-6, and Dewain Hendrixson got 11.5 points when Stanford upended Colorado 46-43.

Overall, Jared Davis still leads in underdog points with 35 followed by Dewain Hendrixson with 30, Ricky Atnip 26.5, Darrell Gill 18, Scott Goodwin 12.5, Chad Kirby and John Pryor each with 6.5, and Grant James with 3 points.

Today (Thursday) the Forecasters will be picking winners in the following games:

Penn State at Ohio State, Utah at USC, Oklahoma State at West Virginia, Clemson at Miami, Duke at Florida State, TCU at Kansas State, Minnesota at Iowa, Boston College at Georgia Tech, Memphis at UAB, Texas Tech at BYU, Pittsburgh at Wake Forest, Ole Miss at Auburn, Mississippi State at Arkansas, South Carolina at Missouri, and Tennessee at Alabama.
