City Poised to Award Bid for Bridge Replacement
March 2, 2023
By: Dwayne Page
The City of Smithville is poised to have a small bridge with a hole in it replaced over Dry Creek Road just off of West Broad Street.
During Monday night’s regular monthly meeting, March 6 the aldermen are expected to award a bid for the replacement of the bridge. Most if not all the funds for the project will come from the city’s share of American Rescue Plan Act money.
The city council meeting will be Monday night, March 6 at 6 p.m. at city hall.
Although it remains partially open to traffic, the bridge has a hole through it that city officials discovered last summer. The Mayor and Aldermen subsequently voted to have an engineer develop plans and specifications for eventual bid letting for a new bridge. A bid opening was held this past Tuesday morning.
When construction begins this spring, the street at the site of construction will have to be closed until the project is completed.
In other business, the aldermen are expected to adopt on second and final reading an ordinance to rezone the Carol Buchanan property from R-1 residential to C-1 commercial located at State Route 56 and Jennings Lane near the Smithville Church of the Nazarene. First reading action was taken last month upon the recommendation of the Smithville Planning Commission.
The aldermen are further expected to adopt on first reading an ordinance concerning septic tank effluent pumps (STEP).
Last month, Daniel Tribble, Manager of Field Services for JR Wauford and Company of Nashville recommended that the city adopt an ordinance or resolution to prohibit future installation of STEPs by private developers based on a new state law which requires municipalities to maintain them. JR Wauford is the city’s engineering consultant.

Two Airlifted After Wednesday Morning Crash at Liberty

Two men were airlifted after a crash at Liberty Wednesday morning.
According to Trooper Brent Collier of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 62-year-old Gregory Drake was north on Highway 53 in a 2011 Ford Econoline 350 when he pulled onto Highway 70 and into the path of an eastbound 2008 Dodge Charger driven by 20-year-old Jordan Bailiff. Upon impact both vehicles traveled a short distance north before coming to final rest off the left side of the roadway.
Members of the DeKalb County Fire Department and Rescue Team were summoned to provide extrication services on the Drake vehicle. Chief Donny Green said the Econoline had to be stabilized because it was almost on its side and the driver’s side door had to be removed to gain access to Drake.
Both Drake and Bailiff were injured and taken by DeKalb EMS to landing zones set up on the campus of DeKalb West School where they were airlifted by helicopter ambulances.
