County Legend John Anderson to be Grand Marshal of Smithville Christmas Parade Saturday, December 3

County music legend John Anderson will be the Grand Marshal of the Smithville Christmas Parade.

The parade will be Saturday, December 3 starting at 4:00 pm. The lineup will begin at 2:00 pm at The New Life Connections Center on South Congress Boulevard. Competition floats are all that need to register. To register a float, email the name of the organization / group to: smithvillefiredept@gmail.com or text to 615-318-6900. All other entries do not have to register as they will be put in line as they arrive. Side by sides are allowed with licensed drivers, but no 4 wheelers. Horses & Wagons will unload at the Bill Page Ballpark and enter the parade route on Bryant Street at the redlight.

Immediately after the Smithville Parade, Christmas on the Square will begin around 5:30 PM. The Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber wants to invite everyone to stay after the parade for many fun activities in downtown Smithville.

Meanwhile the Liberty Christmas Parade will be Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m. The lineup begins at 1 p.m. on West Main Street near Salem Baptist Church. In addition to floats, the entries this year will include a category for kids and a separate one for animals/4 wheelers and then another for antique vehicles/tractors. Refreshments will also be served. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for pictures.

The Alexandria Christmas Parade will be Sunday, December 4 at 5 p.m. The lineup begins at 4 p.m. on West Main Street near the car wash. For more information call the Alexandria City Hall at 615-529-2171 or obtain entry forms at www.townofalexandria.us.

After taking a week off the DCHS basketball teams will resume their schedule tonight on the road at Watertown. The girls game will tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys game and WJLE will have LIVE coverage of both on AM 1480/FM 101.7 and on the LIVE stream at www.wjle.com.

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers have records of 4-1. Coach Joey Agee’s Tigers suffered their first loss of the season last week at Cannon County 44 to 42 before getting back in the win column against Warren County 68 to 66.

“I think we have performed very well so far. We let one get away at Cannon County. We’re still working on holding onto those leads. The last two games we have had double digit leads and gave it up but I think we learned a lot from the loss to Cannon County which helped us last Friday night against Warren County. After we were up by 10 points they came back and we went down by 5 or 6 points and then we battled back and won the game so I think we learned from the loss to Cannon County,” said Coach Agee.

The purple Tigers of Watertown have a record of 2-3.

“I don’t know exactly what players they have back from last year but I have seen some film on them. They have some pretty good scorers including a couple of kids who shoot the ball really well. They have a big kid inside who in the games I have seen didn’t necessarily score a lot but he takes up a lot of room inside. We will have to do a good job of moving the ball and keeping him off the board. They do play really hard and get after you on defense. They extend their defense up some so we will have to take care of the ball,” Coach Agee said.

After starting their season at 4-0 the Lady Tigers of Coach Brandy Alley were handed a 78-53 defeat last Friday night against Warren County.

“I think our girls played super hard. It was one of those games that hurt but there were a lot of learning moments that we can improve on. We’ll take it and move on,” said Coach Alley.

“There have been a couple of things that we messed up on in our last game but we have been able to break it down and go step by step how to fix it so its just been attacking one little thing at a time,” she continued.

The Watertown girls are 0-4.

“They have some really good players. We played against them once this summer and it did not come out well but that was my first day with the girls and everybody was just really nervous. We’ll be watching for them because they create some really great pressure. I think they returned almost everybody from last year so they will be ready to go,” said Coach Alley.

All gifts for children in the 28th annual DeKalb County Angel Tree Project must be in by today (Friday, December 2)

Your support is needed to help make this holiday season merrier for 331 children. Laura Stone said Angel Trees are located at bank locations in Smithville and Alexandria. Each Angel represents a child and his or her wish list for Christmas. Select an Angel from the tree, buy a gift for the child and return the gift to the bank where you picked up the Angel by today (December 2nd).

“This is our 28th year serving children 12 and younger living in DeKalb County. Angel cards are located on Christmas trees in the local banks. People of the community can pick up an Angel and buy for a child. The wish list on each Angel is just a suggestion. It is what the child has specifically requested. Sometimes people will buy only what is listed on the card. In some cases they will buy additional things. It is not necessary that you buy everything on the list. It is your choice if you want to wrap the gifts. We need the gifts back by December 2nd.”, said Stone.

Please consider adopting an Angel today or if you have no time to shop, donations can be made at Wilson Bank or any Smithville or Alexandria bank branch and the Volunteers will do the shopping for you.
