Suspected Marijuana Growers Named in Sealed Indictments

Two men found growing marijuana on their properties on Barnes Mill Road more than a year ago have been arrested after being named in sealed indictments recently returned by the DeKalb County Grand Jury.

60-year-old Steven James Cantrell and 71-year-old Larry Adcock are each charged in the indictments for possession of a schedule VI drug (marijuana) with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver. Bond for each is $3,500. They appeared for arraignment in DeKalb County Criminal Court Monday, August 1.

Members of the Governor’s Task Force on Marijuana Eradication conducted a flyover in portions of DeKalb County on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 searching for marijuana grow operations.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said the Task Force reported finding a total of about 30 plants in two separate grows including in-doors and outdoors at the properties of Cantrell and Adcock on Barnes Mill Road.

“They called us to come and process the scenes. We seized the marijuana and grow equipment,” said Sheriff Ray.

Meanwhile, 38-year-old Tabatha Marie Batey of McMinnville is cited for possession of drugs without a prescription and possession of a schedule VI drug (marijuana). Her court date is August 18. Sheriff Ray said that on July 25 during a vehicle search Batey, who consented to the search, was found to be in possession of two white pills believed to be Gabapentin without a prescription. She also had 0.29 ounces of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.

43-year-old Scotty Wayne Knowles of Jacobs Pillar Road, Smithville is charged with possession of a schedule I drug (Heroin). His bond is $2,500 and he will be in court on August 18. Sheriff Ray said that on July 25 a deputy spotted a possible stranded motorist on Cookeville Highway. He stopped to render assistance and observed that the driver, Knowles appeared to be nervous. A background check revealed that Knowles’ driver license was revoked. Knowles informed the officer that he was on probation. Knowles consented to a search of his person and vehicle and the deputy found him to be in possession of 0.24 grams of a pink powdery substance believed to be Heroin.

64-year-old Julienne Leigh Daniel of Captain’s Point Road, Silver Point is charged with a second offense of driving under the influence. Her bond is $10,000 and she will be in court August 11. Sheriff Ray said that on July 26 a deputy was dispatched to the area of Captain’s Point Road due to a report of a possible intoxicated motorist parked in the roadway. Upon arrival the officer spoke with the driver, Daniel whose white Honda was blocking the road. She had a strong odor of alcohol on her and three vodka bottles were found in the floorboard. When Daniel got out of the car the officer noticed that she was unsteady on her feet. Daniel was unable to complete field sobriety tasks.

53 year old Curtis Lee Adams of Midway Road, Smithville is charged with domestic assault. His bond is $3,500 and he will make a court appearance August 18. Sheriff Ray said that on July 30 Adams got into an argument with a woman that turned physical when he took her phone and grabbed her arms resulting in bruises and scratches on her left arm. The woman also claims that Adams hit her in the forehead.

40-year-old Anthony Charles Skaroupka of South College Street, Smithville is charged with public intoxication. His bond is $1,500 and he will make a court appearance on August 18. Sheriff Ray said that on August 1 a deputy was patrolling Short Mountain Highway when he spotted two men riding bikes on the road. He stopped them and found that one of the men, Skaroupka was unsteady on his feet and that his speech was slurred. Skaroupka admitted to having earlier taken some prescription medication and had smoke marijuana.

A Sunday night fire damaged a travel trailer and threatened the house next to it in the Belk community before it was brought under control.

According to DeKalb Fire Lieutenant and Communications Officer Blake Cantrell, members of the department were dispatched to the trailer fire at 2752 Corinth Church Road. The North Warren and Rock Island Fire Stations in Warren County were also summoned to the scene. Upon arrival firefighters found the trailer fully involved in flames. Members of the DeKalb and North Warren Stations extinguished the blaze using approximately 2,000 gallons of water.

“The owner, Robbie Lawson, and his son, Robin were outside when they noticed flames coming from the middle section of the trailer. Robbie tried to get in then discovered his son was not in the trailer. They then tried to use the water hose to extinguish the blaze, but it got out of hand. The fire damaged the trailer, deck, part of the roof to the house, and a 2001 F-350 Ford Truck,” said Lt Cantrell.

Officers of the DeKalb and Warren County Sheriff’s Departments were also on the scene.

A man accused of aggravated statutory rape who led Smithville Police on a pursuit last September before crashing his vehicle was sentenced in DeKalb County Criminal Court Monday, August 1.

Judge Gary McKenzie presided.

27-year-old Tyler Shawn Fowler entered a plea to aggravated statutory rape and received a three-year sentence to serve at least 30% before his release eligibility date. He was given jail credit from September 6, 2021 to August 1, 2022. His name will be on the state’s sexual offender registry.

The Fowler story unfolded on Friday, September 10, 2021 at around 3:15 p.m. on Meadowbrook Drive as Fowler tried to outrun Smithville Police. When the officer initiated his lights and sirens, Fowler began to increase his speed and refused to stop. After about a 15-minute chase, Fowler ran the vehicle he was driving into a ditch and began to flee on foot. The Tennessee Highway Patrol was later summoned to help search the woods using a K-9. At the time officers thought Fowler might be armed. He was not. Trooper Bobby Johnson, Trooper Andrew Coppinger, and THP K-9 officer Adam Cothron and his dog Draco arrived on the scene.

“We responded to Tabernacle Road due to a man who had fled on foot into the woods and was possibly armed. He was wanted for aggravated kidnapping. They requested our K-9 assistance. The K-9 came from Trousdale County and upon arrival he began to track. After a couple of minutes he located the suspect in some brush. Fowler wouldn’t comply with commands to get on the ground or get his hands up so the K-9 was deployed and drug him out from the brush. Fowler was then checked out by DeKalb EMS and taken into custody,” said Trooper Johnson.

Tyler was wanted for the aggravated statutory rape of a 15-year-old. The indictment alleges that Fowler unlawfully and intentionally or knowingly sexually penetrated the teen between the dates of April and September 2021.

37-year-old Ashley Dawn Williams entered a plea to facilitation to commit identity theft and received a sentence of 11 months and 29 days all suspended to judicial diversion.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on March 1, 2020 Williams used the name and social security number of another person in order to open an account with Xfinity for herself. She admitted to having committed the crime. The case was investigated by a Sheriff’s Department Detective.

49-year-old William Oscar Meadows entered a plea to possession with intent to sell or deliver less than 0.5 grams of methamphetamine. He received a six-year sentence suspended to supervised probation with 180 days to serve and fined $2,000. He was given jail credit of 180 days.

46-year-old Steven Ellis Anderson entered a plea to sale of a schedule II drug (methamphetamine) greater than 0.5 grams and received an eight-year sentence suspended to supervised probation. He was fined $2,000.

36-year-old Corey Winchester entered a plea to driving under the influence and received a sentence of 11 months and 29 days all suspended except for 48 hours to serve. He will be on supervised probation and must pay a $350 fine. He will lose his driver license for a year.
