DeKalb West Celebrates Students at Awards

Six students made it through the entire school year at DeKalb West with perfect attendance. Not only does that include being present every day, but it also means they were never late and didn’t leave school early. DWS Principal Sabrina Farler awarded $50 each to Maddux and Marley Pyburn, Karson and Kaden Mullinax, Autumn Crook, and Ben Driver.

DeKalb West School third grader Karson Mullinax became one of the youngest students to ever receive the Mrs. Sabrina Farler Principal’s Award. Mullinax had the most yearly Accelerated Reader points with 519.3 points. For the second year in a row. Ethan Brown was presented with the Mrs. Amanda Mullinax Librarian’s Award for the most accumulated Accelerated Reader points. He has notched 1986.9 points. This is the second year in a row for Brown to receive the high honor.

Three students were honored with a 1,000 point plaque including Karson Mullinax, Caitlin Shoemake and Connor Talley. Three students earned the AR Duffle bag: Kaden Mullinax, Hannah Brown, and Kenadee Prichard. Picking up the $10 gift certificate were Karson Mullinax, Bentley Martin, and Abby Joe Crook.

Students also were honored for their academic success with the Principal’s List for All A’s throughout the year, the A/B Honor for all 4 9 weeks and various subject awards




DeKalb Local Option Sales Tax Collections for April Down from same month in 2021

DeKalb County’s share of local option sales tax collections for April 2022 were down by more than $5,200 compared to the same month in 2021 according to the Tennessee Department of Revenue while for the county and the four cities therein, combined collections were down by over $51,000.

DeKalb County brought in $144,651 in April 2022 compared to $149,918 for April 2021.

Three of the four cities within DeKalb County took in less local option sales tax revenue in April compared to 2021. Liberty was the exception.

The comparisons between the two months for each municipality are as follows:

Smithville: $365,700 (April 2022), $376,296 (April 2021)

Alexandria: $27,402 (April 2022), $34,482 (April 2021)

Dowelltown: $3,032 (April 2022), $3,159 (April 2021)

Liberty: $11,620 (April 2022), 9,604 (April 2021)

NET COLLECTIONS (LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX): $522,407 (April 2022), $573,462 (April 2021)

DeKalb County Observes EMS Week

A week dedicated to celebrating emergency service workers is being recognized in DeKalb County.

The community relies on emergency workers to rush to the rescue, no matter what the circumstance.

County Mayor Tim Stribling has signed a proclamation designating May 15-21 as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week in DeKalb County. EMS Director Hoyte Hale joined County Mayor Stribling for the occasion.

“We are proud of our DeKalb County EMS employees, EMTs, Paramedics, First Responders and Dispatchers. They are on the front lines, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year Their commitment, dedication and bravery speaks to their character and willingness to serve others, not just this week, but every day of the year. We are honored to celebrate their service this week, and we are grateful to them every day,” said Stribling.

The proclamation is as follows:

“Whereas, Emergency Medical Services is a vital public service; and Whereas, the members of Emergency Medical Teams are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and

Whereas, access to quality Emergency Care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury; and

Whereas, the Emergency Medical Services system consists of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, administrators, and others; and
Whereas, the members of Emergency Medical Services teams, whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their lifesaving skills; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the value and the accomplishments of Emergency Medical Services providers by designating Emergency Medical Services Week;

Now, Therefore, I Tim Stribling, County Mayor, DeKalb County, Tennessee, in recognition of this event do hereby proclaim the week of May 15-21 as Emergency Medical Services Week.

With the theme, “Rising To The Challenge”, I encourage the community to observe this week with the appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities”.
