Tennessee’s 2022 Free Fishing Day is set for Saturday, June 11 when anyone may fish free without a license in Tennessee’s public waters.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency provides the annual free day in hopes of increasing interest in fishing. The day allows anyone the opportunity to try this great outdoor sport to celebrate fishing as a wholesome and healthy recreational opportunity. In addition, children ages 15 and younger may fish without a license beginning on Free Fishing Day through the following Friday (June 17).

The day and week are annual events in Tennessee and are great opportunities to introduce children to the enjoyment and excitement of a day on the water catching fish. The TWRA is among several organizations planning special fishing events, primarily for youngsters. The TWRA annually stocks several thousand pounds of fish for various events.

For a list of the events, visit the TWRA website at www.tnwildlife.org and the fishing page. Anglers and potential anglers should check the events list often since special events are frequently added.

Free Fishing Day and Week apply to Tennessee’s public waters, TWRA owned and operated lakes, and state park facilities. Some privately owned pay lakes and ponds continue to charge during this special day and week. Anglers will need to consult with those operators if there are any questions about a facility.

DeKalb Fishing Team Competes at State

The DeKalb County High School fishing team tried to reel in a big one at the Tennessee Bass Nation State Tournament. But the big catch got away from the four teams participating. The teams of Jaxon Humphrey and Rowan Miller, Haston and Hagen Waggoner, Mason Taylor and Wesley Kent and Logan O’Connor cast their lines out June 3rd and 4th on Kentucky Lake at Paris Landing.

Fishing teams throughout the state of Tennessee accumulate points throughout the season, and the Top 30 in points for each region of Tennessee advance to the state tournament. Unfortunately, none of DeKalb’s team members placed high enough to advance to the national tournament that will be held in August in South Carolina.

“This Saturday is our car show “Motors for Mutts” at the DeKalb Animal Shelter from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. We will also have an Open House. We will reduce prices on all adoptions that day. All adoption fees for dogs will be reduced to $60 and $40 for cats. We have lots of dogs, cats, and kittens so we would love to get them adopted that day. Slick Pig Barbeque will be here at 10 a.m. We will also have coffee and doughnuts. The Alexandria Café will provide the coffee. A Best in Show Award will be presented at the end of the car show and The Male Room Brotique is providing a $100 gift card for the winner of that. Short Mountain Diesel is also sponsoring two pets including a cat and dog so they will pay for the entire adoption fee that day for those two pets,” said Bennett.

Meanwhile the Friends of the DeKalb Animal Shelter will be presenting “Tee Up For Tails” in partnership with the Smithville Golf Course on Friday, June 24. Signups begin at 4 p.m. with a shotgun start at 5 p.m. The entry fee is $40 per player.
