Danny Fish steps down as DCHS Tigerette Softball Coach

May 26, 2022
By: Dwayne Page

After six seasons, DCHS Tigerette Softball Coach Danny Fish is stepping down in that role to devote more time to his family. However, Fish will remain the head coach of the DCHS Lady Tiger basketball program, a position he has also held for six years and will continue as a physical education teacher. Danielle Tyson Horton, who has worked with Coach Fish as an assistant softball coach, has been named to succeed him as head coach.

Coach Fish said the demands of coaching the back-to-back sports of girls basketball and softball each year have cut down on his family time over the years and with his son about to move from the middle school to the high school, he would like to have more free time to watch him play sports as a parent.

“My son Devin will be in high school next year and he is a two sport athlete. He plays basketball and he will play baseball so it was time for me to step away from one of the sports as a coach to be a parent. I couldn’t imagine being on the softball field and Devin playing a home game and not being able to watch him regardless of if he is playing or not. I also have a daughter Karah who is seven years old and I want to be more involved with her too. It was a tough decision for me but I am a father first,” said Coach Fish.

In his resignation letter to DCHS Principal Bruce Curtis, Coach Fish wrote “ Six years ago when I was asked to take over this historic program and follow in the footsteps of Legendary Coach Danny Bond, I never thought we would be able to do so much in such a short period of time. I have always felt being the Coach of the Tigerette program was a privilege and honor. Our staff has tried our best every day to give our student athletes the best experience possible. Have we fallen short some? Absolutely. Have we gotten back up and tried to get better? Every day. Because of that mentality our program has made great strides over the past six years from fundraising, to field renovations, played in the most prestigious tournaments and last but not least the team and player accomplishments”.

“Thank You to the parents, administration, community sponsors and local media for believing and committing to our vision for the program. We have all had a part in making these last six years memorable. We have given the athletes the opportunity to go places they have never been before from Orange Beach to the Starplex . Thank you for helping us give these athletes a little slice of big time”.

“Most of all thank you to the players. Thank you for your patience, work ethic, sacrifice and persistence. Thank you for loving my family like your own. Your willingness to do these things gave us an opportunity to reach our goals together. I will be forever thankful for your trust in the mission and the vision we set together”.

“I am very thankful for my last ten years in the Tigerette program. We have had an amazing run over the past decade including three State tournaments appearances, six district championships, five regional championships, thirteen college signees, and an overall softball record of 108-63. With that being said I believe it is time for me to make a change. I believe the program is turnkey ready for the next staff and I look forward to watching the program grow,” wrote Coach Fish.

DeKalb April Jobless Rate at 3.4%

Newly released data from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development showed nearly every county in Tennessee had unemployment rates below 5% in April. Perry County was the only county with a rate above 5% and its April number came in at 5.1%.

DeKalb County’s April jobless rate was 3.4%, up slightly from 3.3% in March but below the 4.5% rate for April, 2021.

The local labor force for April was 7,860. A total of 7,591 were employed with 269 without work.

Unemployment rates decreased in 12 Tennessee counties in April. Sixty counties did experience slight increases in their rates for the month, while jobless numbers remained unchanged in 23 counties.

Williamson County recorded the state’s lowest unemployment rate at 2%, which is 0.1 of a percentage point higher than the county’s March rate of 1.9%. Moore County had the next lowest rate in April at 2.1%, up 0.2 of a percentage point from the previous month’s number.

At 5.1%, Perry County had the month’s highest unemployment rate but unemployment in the county was down 0.1 of a percentage point from its March rate of 5.2%. Cocke County had the second-highest rate in April at 4.8% but its rate dropped by 0.3 of a percentage point when compared to the previous month.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) calculates county and statewide unemployment rates differently. It does not factor in seasonal impacts on data when determining county unemployment rates, while it does seasonally adjust the statewide unemployment number.

Across Tennessee, unemployment remained at a historic low in April. March’s record-breaking rate of 3.2% bested the previous record of 3.3% and held steady into April.

The national unemployment rate also remained unchanged in April at 3.6%. One year ago, the national rate came in at 6%.

The state provides a wide range of free services that can help Tennesseans searching for work find good, meaningful employment. Job seekers can start their journey back into the workforce at www.TNWorkReady.com.

Nomination period underway for FSA County Committee Election

May 26, 2022
By:

Donny Green, DeKalb-Cannon County FSA County Executive Director, announces that the nomination period for the 2022 Farm Service Agency (FSA) County Committee Election is underway. The nomination period continues through August 1, 2022.

“I encourage all producers to participate in the county committee election process by nominating candidates by the August 1 deadline,” said Green. “We are counting on as much participation as possible, because county committees are an important link between the farm community and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. We have seen a trend in recent years of increased nominations of minority, beginning farmers, and women producers and we hope that will continue.”

Committees apply their judgment and knowledge to make decisions on county commodity price-support loan eligibility, establishment of allotments and yields, conservation programs, disaster programs, employment and other farm program related issues. Nationwide, there are more than 7,700 farmers and ranchers serving on FSA county committees.

Committees consist of three to 11 members who are elected by eligible local producers. Members serve three-year terms.

To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area in which the person is a candidate.

Nominees must reside in Local Administrative Area (LAA) for which they are seeking to be elected.

For the 2022 Election, the DeKalb-Cannon FSA County Committee Election will conduct elections in LAA-3. Below is the description of the LAA’s that will be conducting elections this year:

Local Administrative Area # 3, the portions of DeKalb County described as following:
East of Hwy. 56 South beginning at the DeKalb/Warren county line, following Hwy. 56 in a northern direction to the intersection of Highway 56 and Highway 70; south of Highway 70 East to Center Hill Lake; following Center Hill Lake north and northwest to the Caney Fork River thence to the Smith County line; south of the Smith County line and west of the Putnam County line to the White
County line; west of the White County line to the Warren County line; north of the Warren County line following the county line back to Highway 56 South at the DeKalb/Warren County line.

Individuals may nominate themselves, or others, as a candidate. In addition, eligible candidates can be nominated by community-based and other organizations in the county where the election is being held before the close of the nomination period, especially groups representing socially disadvantaged farmers or ranchers. Nominations and elections are open to all eligible candidates and voters without regard to race, color, religion, nation origin, age, sex, marital status or disability. The nomination form (FSA-669A) is available at USDA Service Centers and online at:
http://www.fsa.usda.gov/elections.

Ballots will be mailed to all eligible voters in LAA’s # 3 on November 7, 2022. Completed ballots must be returned, either in person or postmarked, no later December 5, 2022. For more information about FSA county committees, visit the DeKalb/Cannon County USDA Service Center or call 615-597-8225, extension 2.
