DeKalb Jobless Rate for March Climbs to 6%

Following a slight rise in the statewide unemployment rate in March, jobless statistics experienced minor increases in most of Tennessee’s 95 counties, according to newly released data from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD).

DeKalb County’s jobless rate for March was 6%, up from 5.4% in February which was also the March, 2020 unemployment rate (5.4%)

The local labor force for March was 7,635. A total of 7,175 were employed and 460 were unemployed.

Five counties across the state did experience lower unemployment for the month, while rates went up in 86 counties, and remained the same in four counties.

Thirty-two of Tennessee’s counties had a jobless rate of less than 5%. The remaining 63 counties recorded a rate of 5% or higher.

Williamson County’s jobless statistic of 3.3% was the lowest in the state. Its March rate was 0.3 of a percentage point higher than it was in February.

At 3.6%, Moore County posted the second-lowest rate in the state but that is a 0.1 of a percentage point increase from the previous month. Wilson County’s rate of 4% was the third lowest in March, which is an increase of 0.3 of a percentage point.

Unemployment in Lake County decreased by 0.1 of a percentage point to 8.9%, which is the state’s highest rate for the month.

Perry County’s rate of 7.5% was 0.2 of a percentage point higher than the previous month’s rate. Unemployment in Bledsoe county went up 0.5 of a percentage point to 7.4%.

Statewide, seasonally adjusted unemployment inched up 0.1 of a percentage point to 5% in March.

Nationally, unemployment dropped 0.2 of a percentage point to 6%.

The state offers online options for Tennesseans searching for employment. Currently, on Jobs4TN.gov, job seekers can find more than 240,000 open positions in a wide range of occupations and skill levels. The Tennessee Virtual American Job Center www.TNVirtualAJC.com allows Tennesseans to research different programs, from different state agencies that can help them remove barriers to employment so they can more easily reenter the workforce.




DeKalb Neighbors Helping Neighbors Blood Drive Monday, April 26

A DeKalb County Neighbors Helping Neighbors Blood Assurance Drive will be Monday, April 26 from 12 noon until 5 p.m. at the County Complex in front of the Senior Citizens Center inside the Bloodmobile.

All donors will be given a FREE “Loyal Lifesaver” t-shirt and entered into a drawing for a chance to win a “2021 Side-by-Side”. All donors will also receive a $10 Starbucks Gift Card.

UCHRA Commodities Distribution
The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency (UCHRA) will hold a commodities distribution for DeKalb County on Thursday, April 29, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the DeKalb County UCHRA office. Sign up will be available at the distribution site. This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee.

DCHS Chorus Concert
The DCHS Chorus Concert will be May 6 at 6:30 pm in the history room at the County Complex Community Center Free admission but donations will be greatly appreciated.

Job Fair Thursday, April 29
The American Job Center, TN Dept of Labor, and Upper Cumberland Workforce Development Board are hosting a Job Fair on Thursday April 29th from 9am to 1pm at the DeKalb County Complex Community Center Auditorium, 712 S. Congress Blvd in Smithville. It is open to all employers and currently Ficosa, NHC HealthCare, Bonnell Aluminum, Star Manufacturing, Tenneco, Bledsoe County Correctional Complex, and Resource Manufacturing have committed to attend.

Health Department to Offer First Dose of COVID-19 Vaccine Without Appointment for Those Age 18 and Over
The DeKalb Health Department will be offering the first dose COVID vaccine for those age 18+ without an appointment on Tuesdays 8-11am and Thursdays from 1-4pm at the fairgrounds. Vaccine appointments for other times will still be available at https://covid19.tn.gov/.

Informational Meetings on $500,000 THDA HOME program grant
DeKalb County has secured a $500,000 HOME program grant from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) to help local families with home repairs.

Informational meetings will be held at the following locations to learn more about the application procedures and grant guidelines.

The Alexandria Firefighters Association Benefit Ride will be Saturday, May 22 at 33840 Nashville Highway, Alexandria supported by Silent Creed Motorcycle Club and Bikers for Christ. Motorcycle Ride: All bikes welcome. Registration 9-10 a.m. Kickstands up at 10 a.m. $20- driver. Passenger free but food not included. Approximately 2 hour scenic ride. Fee includes meal at the end of the ride (BBQ or hotdog, chips, and drink. Food Tent for the public featuring BBQ by Fireman 1 Bar-B-Que. DeKalb County School Calendar
The remainder of the 2020-21 school calendar shows that Thursday, May 2 will be an administrative day with no school for students. Friday, May 21 will be the last day of school for the year and report cards will be sent home. Graduation for the Class of 2021 will be Friday, May 14 at 7 p.m. on the high school football field.

DeKalb Health Department Moving COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic to Fairgrounds in Alexandria
The DeKalb County Health Department has moved its Covid vaccine location to the Alexandria Fairgrounds (102 Fairgrounds Rd, Alexandria, TN 37012). First and second doses will be given at this location.

Their hours of operation will be as followed:

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays will be from 9am-3pm
Tuesdays will be 7am-3pm
Thursdays will be 9am-6pm
