Signups this week for DeKalb Saints Football

DeKalb Saints Middle School Football signups are underway this week.

Forms are available at the offices of Northside, DeKalb Middle, and DeKalb West Schools. Any rising 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student interested in playing middle school football must pick up and return the forms by the end of school on Friday, February 26 or you may bring them to the first day of practice on Monday, March 1 from 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the old gymnasium at DeKalb Middle School. DCHS basketball teams make quick exit from district tournament

The season came to a close for both the DCHS Tigers and Lady Tigers Sunday afternoon with losses to Smith County in the 1st round of the District 8AA basketball tournament in Smithville.

The Lady Tigers lost 82 to 63 while the Tigers were handed a 43 to 39 defeat.

The DeKalb County Lady Tigers had swept the season series with Smith County including a 63 to 47 victory in Smithville on January 19 and a 40 to 34 win at Carthage on February 11.

For the boys the Tigers and Owls split during the regular season with a 67 to 62 DC win last month in Smithville and a 55 to 54 overtime win for Smith County at Carthage earlier this month.

Both DeKalb County teams entered the tournaments as the 6th seed and Smith County the 7th.

In the game Sunday, the Lady Tigers trailed 18 to 13 after the 1st period, 39 to 22 at halftime, and 56 to 45 after the 3rd period before falling 82 to 63. DC fell behind by as many as 21 points during the game but cut the Smith County lead to five points in the 4th period before the Owlettes extended their advantage and went on to win.

Ella VanVranken led the Lady Tigers with 27 points, Kadee Ferrell 12, Megan Cantrell 9, Xharia Lyons 8, Madison Martin 5, and Summer Crook and Hannah Willingham each with 1.

In the boys game, DeKalb trailed 11 to 5 after the 1st period and 14 to 11 at halftime. The Tigers grabbed a 29 to 22 lead after the 3rd period but fell behind in the 4th period and lost 43 to 39.
Brayden Antoniak and Stetson Agee each scored 11, Evan Jones, Luke Jenkins, and Jordan Crook each scored 5, and Elishah Ramos had 2 points.

The Lady Tigers finish the season with an overall record of 10-15 while the Tigers finish at 10-14.

The Smith County Owlettes (9-14) will travel to York Institute (19-6) the 3rd seed Monday, February 22 for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Owls (9-15) will visit Livingston Academy (15-10) the 3rd seed Monday, February 21 at 8:15 p.m.
