DeKalb West Junior Beta Club volunteers to help the Hope Center

The DeKalb West School Junior Beta Club showed the Christmas spirit again by volunteering to help the Hope Center.

6th graders Raegan Murphy, Kenadee Prichard, Charlie Cripps, Landon Roehner, and Leyton Scarbrough each gave a couple hours of their time on Saturday (Dec. 12). They assisted in digging through bags of clothes that had been donated to the Hope Center to be given away in the near future.

The Beta Club is a service organization dedicated to following the motto, “Let Us Lead By Serving Others.”

Meet “Hunter” the DeKalb Animal Shelter and WJLE featured “Pet of the Week”.

“Hunter” is a three year old Shepherd Mix.

“Hunter is  very sweet and funny. He has a goofy personality. We would be a great farm dog.. He likes to be with you and hang out. He is cuddly and has already been neutered. If you would like to meet Hunter put in an application on our website //www.dekalbanimalcoalition.org/ and we will call you to set up an appointment,” said Shelter employee Jennifer Angaran.

“Our adoptions are now at a lower cost due to subsidies from the Friends of the DeKalb Animal Shelter group who is sponsoring $40 for each cat and $50 for each dog. That makes the fees to the public much more affordable,” said Shelter Director Megan Moore.

Santa made another appearance in DeKalb County on Saturday night for the Alexandria Christmas Parade.

The town’s annual holiday tradition , held this year after dark, gave onlookers a chance to experience the spirit of the season under the glow of lights along the parade route from West Main Street to the downtown square.

The parade made its way into town led by Alexandria Police Chief Chris Russell followed by Sheriff Patrick Ray. The Parade also featured floats, the DCHS band, vintage automobiles, a mule drawn wagon, ATVS,, fire trucks, Tennessee Division of Forestry and Smoky the Bear, Smithville- DeKalb Rescue Squad, DeKalb EMS, Santa Claus, and more.

Mike and Kay Prichard served as Grand Marshals

In the float category, Wilson Bank & Trust won 1st place. It was the bank’s third parade award this season. Wilson Bank & Trust also won 1st place in the Smithville and Liberty Christmas Parades last week.

For best vintage automobiles, Sondja McLaughlin won 1st place for her 1956 Chevy Nomad.

In the ATV category, Levi Reynolds won 1st place for his 4 wheeler.

Drawings for prizes followed the parade.
