By: Dwayne Page

A Baxter man was killed in a crash Monday afternoon on Highway 56 (Cookeville Highway) north of Hurricane Bridge near the scenic overlook.

Dead is 53 year old Mickey James.

According to Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, James was driving north in a 1996 Ford Ranger when a southbound 2009 Chevy Malibu, driven by 35 year old Kevin Boersma of McMinnville, crossed the center line and struck James’ pickup. The force of the crash knocked the truck into and partially across a guardrail. James, not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected. He died at the scene.

Boersma was transported by DeKalb EMS to Ascension Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with a second offense of driving on a suspended license and failure to exercise due care.

The crash was investigated by Trooper Johnson who was assisted by Trooper Caleb Bain and Lieutenant Billy Prater of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Others on the scene in addition to DeKalb EMS were members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department Rescue and Extrication Team and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.

James’ death marks the 5th traffic fatality of the year in DeKalb County.

County Mayor Tim Stribling was re-elected Chairman of the County Commission Monday night by acclamation.

Sixth district member Jeff Barnes, the longest serving member of the commission at 18 years, was named chairman pro temp.

The County Commission reorganizes each September naming a chairman and chairman pro temp to serve for the ensuing 12 months.

(The video below shows county commission discussion and action on electing a chairman and chairman pro temp, sales tax report,  and budget amendments including a $75 per month increase in pay for judicial commissioners which was approved on a 10-4 vote)

Members of the commission are Julie Young and Dennis Slager in the 1st district, Sabrina Farler and Myron Rhody in the 2nd district, Jenny Trapp and Bobby Johnson in the 3rd district, Scott Little and Janice Fish-Stewart in the 4th district, Jerry Adcock and Anita Puckett in the 5th district, Jeff Barnes and Matt Adcock in the 6th district, and Bruce Malone and Beth Pafford in the 7th district.

The commission meets in regular monthly session on the fourth Monday night at 6:30 p.m. usually in the downstairs courtroom of the courthouse but in recent months at the County Complex auditorium.
