DeKalb Animal Coalition Hoping to Find Home for “Isabelle” (View Video Here)

Two weeks ago five puppies shared the spotlight as the WJLE/DeKalb Animal Coalition featured Pets. This week their mother, Isabelle takes center stage.

“Isabelle is sweet as pie. She is looking forward to being able to be a pup herself after working hard to raise her 7 pups to be ready for the world. Isabelle is a lovely red and white spotted hound mix about 3 years old that gets along well with other dogs as long as her pups aren’t around. She will be devoted to her new family and enjoy being part of the pack. Isabelle is looking for her second chance at a comfortable life,” said Shelter Director Megan Moore.

If you would like to come out and meet Isabelle or four of her puppies who remain to be adopted please call or visit the shelter.

The shelter is now open for business Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 12pm-4pm and Saturday 10am-12pm. and has a new telephone number 615-597-3647 (DOGS).

The DeKalb County Fair returns for its annual weeklong run Monday through Saturday, July 15-20.

With the theme “Celebrating 163 years at the Great DeKalb County Fair, this year’s edition will feature another fun filled week of rides by Prime Time Amusement Company, the opening of a brand new Ag Center for hosting various fair activities, and many crowd pleasing events including the Demolition Derby, Bullwhip Rodeo, ATV/Motorcycle Racing, the Lip Sync Battle and much more.

Two new beauty pageants will be added this year, a Mrs. Fair Queen for ladies up to age 54, and a Miss Senior Fair Queen for women age 55 and older.

Cash drawings will be held each night and you must be present to win. Any cash not won during the week will be given away on Saturday night.

The Farm Bureau mobile “Tennessee Agriculture in the Classroom” AgSimulator will also be on site during the fair behind the Commercial Building and in front of the new Ag Center. Students and adults will get to experience the feel of a real harvester cab while true ag facts and harvest simulations play inside the simulator.

The TWRA, Tennessee Division of Forestry, and Tennessee Highway Patrol will have displays and information to share.

*Cattle Show at the Ag Center- 6:00 p.m.
*Bullwhip Rodeo at the T.C. McMillen Arena- 7:30 p.m.

Admission to the fair is $5.00 per person. Children age four and younger will be admitted free! Gates open at 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The exhibit building is open from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Parking is Free!

Caleb Wood may be a teenager from a small town but he is hoping his big voice will land him a spot on “American Idol.”

Caleb, the 16 year old son of Eric and Abigail Wood of the Blue Springs Community in DeKalb County, will be auditioning for the popular program in Knoxville on August 29.

Button Willow General Store downtown Smithville, where Caleb often performs, will be hosting a kick-off event for him on August 16 from 7-9 p.m. and he will be singing some original and cover songs. The public is invited to attend.

Wood is originally from Warren County and he still attends Warren County High School but his family moved to Blue Springs about a year ago.

Caleb, who will be a Junior this fall, said he has always enjoyed singing.

“I grew up singing around the house but in eighth grade I learned how to play the guitar. My science teacher taught me and my best friend how to play. Ever since then I have loved music and play music about every day,” he said.

“My tenth grade year I made the high school choir and the teacher, Kennette Dixon, really taught me how to use and be more powerful with my voice. She really helped me out a lot,” Caleb continued.

Wood, a solo artist, loves rock and country music and writes some of his own material. He describes himself as a “Chris Stapleton” or “Lynyrd Skynyrd” type when it comes to his sound.

His performances were mostly at school-related events until he got the attention of the owners of Button Willow.

“I had done a couple of talent shows and played at a special needs pageant in Warren County and then one day my mom was there (Button Willow) shopping and she found out that people perform down there. We played for them and they liked me so we started playing there,” said Caleb.

Wood said he is excited to be auditioning for “American Idol” and hopes to one day become a star.

“I am going to Knoxville to audition on August 29 and if I make it past the first round they will fly me out to Los Angeles. My dream is to get as far as I can and share my music with the world,” added Caleb.
