Steven Jennings gets opening-day start for Grasshoppers
April 4, 2019
By: Dwayne Page
Former DeKalb County High School baseball standout Steven Jennings is scheduled to be the opening day pitcher for the Greensboro, North Carolina Hoppers Single-A minor league team.
Jennings, a 20-year-old right-hander, went 3-4 with a 4.82 ERA in 13 starts for Bristol last summer.
He was the subject of a recent story in the Greensboro News and Record and Hoppers’ pitching coach Stan Kyles called Jennings “a strike-thrower.”
“He’s a young kid with a good amount of toughness in him. That’s something I like to see. He’s not overpowering, but his stuff is quality stuff. He’s highly thought of in the organization, obviously, to get the nod for opening up here,” Kyles said.

Jennings was the 2017 second round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
