3rd Annual Turkey Trot set for November 10

October 25, 2018
By: Dwayne Page

DeKalb County Coordinated School Health will be holding the 3rd Annual Turkey Trot Walkathon on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Green Brook Park.  The event will benefit The Back Pack Program.

DeKalb County Schools has approximately 6% of our student population that goes hungry on a regular basis, with meals provided at school being their main source of food.  Coordinated School Health (CSH) began sending bags of food home to children over 9 years ago.  We began with long weekends and holidays, and now we feed them every week during the school year.  The Back Pack Program has been sustained through generous donations of time, money, and food from individuals, churches, civic organizations, and grants.  Funding is not always consistent, and we are continuously seeking donations of food and/or money to maintain our program.

This walkathon hopes to encourage our community to get outside and enjoy some physical activity and fun while also supporting a great program.  All ages are welcome.  There are nine age categories and prizes will be given to a male and female in each age category that walks/runs the most laps around Green Brook Park.  We will have games, food, crafts, face painting, and new this year a costume contest!  Registration starts at 10:00am.  Costume contest judging will be from 10:00am to 10:45am, the winner will be announced before the start of the walkathon.  The walkathon will start at 11:00am and end at 12:30pm, with prizes to follow.  There is no fee to participate, we ask that participants bring non-perishable food items for a donation to The Back Pack Program.

MeetUp Spot Offers Safe and Convenient Location for In-Person Transactions

October 24, 2018
By: Dwayne Page

In an effort to protect buyers and sellers and ensure that all exchanges are done in a safe manner, Chief Mark Collins has established a meetup spot. The Smithville Police Department is proud to partner with MeetUp Spot to offer online buyers and sellers with a trusted location to inspect the item and safely complete the transaction. “Our MeetUp location is in the parking lot on Don Cantrell Street across from the Police Department’s north side entrance. OfferUp has partnered with local businesses and police stations to create community MeetUp Spots that are designated as  well-lit, public, surveilled locations for buyers and sellers,” said Chief Collins.

The safe spaces come as a result of risks posed by meeting strangers to swap online sales.

To see more meet-up location options, check out www.safetradespots.com, the largest national database of police and sheriff’s departments and other law enforcement agencies that have designated locations for in-person transactions.
