Sunday Fire Destroys One Home, Heavily Damages Another, and Chars Five Acres of Woodland

A Sunday afternoon fire destroyed one home, heavily damaged another, and charred five acres of woodlands in the Cove Hollow Community off Dale Ridge Road.

According to Assistant Chief Anthony Boyd, the DeKalb County Fire Department was summoned to 175 Village Way to the lake home of Steven Chamberlain, who was not at home when the fire started. Chamberlain’s primary residence is in Hendersonville.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. Assistant Chief Boyd said neighbors who were inside their own homes at the time heard something and came outside to discover the fire. 911 was alerted at 3:28 p.m.

The blaze consumed the home and all contents. Heat from the fire then sparked a blaze at the neighbor lake home of Keith and Teresa Harmon at 160 Village Way. The Harmon’s were not present at the time. Their primary residence is in Murfreesboro.

Although the Harmon home was heavily damaged, the dining room and a bedroom were spared except for some smoke and water damage.

Members of the DeKalb Fire Department’s Main station, Liberty, Temperance Hall, and Cookeville Highway Stations responded along with a tanker, brush truck, the rehab team, and the Alexandria Fire Department who provided mutual aid. DeKalb EMS and the Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene.

The Tennessee Department of Forestry brought the woodland fire under the control.

A firefighter suffered an injury when he fell through the porch of the Harmon home while fighting the fire. He was taken by DeKalb EMS to Ascension Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital where he was treated and released.

Car Hits House After Two Vehicle Crash

November 13, 2023
By: Dwayne Page

Two people were injured in a rainy Thursday night crash in Smithville near the intersection of Highway 146 and Adams Street.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 20-year-old Dalton Allen Mathias was traveling north in a 2009 Nissan Altima in the right lane of Highway 146 as 33-year-old Benjamin Jacob Franklin was east on Gentry Avenue in a 2017 Kia Sorento. After coming to a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 146, Franklin attempted to cross the highway to head east on Adams Street when he crossed the path of Mathias’ vehicle.

The front end of Mathias’ car collided with the right side of Franklin’s automobile. As Mathias’ car came to a final rest off the right side of Highway 146 on Adams Street, Franklin’s car ran off the right side of the roadway, collided with a house and then hit a tree where it came to a final rest.

Although both Mathias and Franklin were wearing their seatbelts, both were injured.

Operation Christmas Child at Allen’s Chapel

November 13, 2023
By: Bill Conger

Allen’s Chapel and Buckner’s Chapel Churches join with other churches and groups across the nation collecting shoe boxes packed with toys and other items for needy children. November 13 through the 20th is National Collections Week for Operation Christmas Child, an outreach of Samaritan’s Purse.

Operations Christmas Child Drop Off Leader Beth Gill of Allen’s Chapel Church says the church at 1037 Coconut Ridge Road in Smithville will be open each day at specific times to accept people’s donation. *(See schedule below.) Churches and groups of all sizes collect boxes from their community each year to provide for children around the world.

If you’re interested in giving, here’s what Samaritan’s Purse recommends. Donors should include one “wow” item like a soccer ball and pump, stuffed animal, musical instrument, large truck or doll, personal care items, crafts and activities, smaller toys, school supplies, clothing and accessories. More details on what to pack and what NOT to include can be found by following this link: https://samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/what-goes-in-my-shoebox-suggestions/#gift-search-section.

Boxes are packed by gender and the age groupings of 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. If you want, you can include a personal note and picture of your family to the child.

To make sure your shoebox gift gets to a child of the right gender and age, Samaritan’s Purse offers some different label options. Labels also offer a way for you to give the necessary $10 donation per shoebox to provide for collection, processing, shipping, and other project costs. If you donate online, the labels allow you to “Follow Your Box” and find out the country where your box will be delivered with the message of Christ’s love. You can simply check back on this page later to learn the destination of your box. Additional details for preparing the box for shipping are online: https://samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/label-options/#activate-labels.
