Stone Memorial Hands DeKalb County First Loss of Season

Six weeks into the high school football season, the DeKalb County Tigers suffered their first defeat of the year with a 31 to 15 loss to the visiting Stone Memorial Panthers in Smithville Thursday night. With the loss, DC drops to 5-1 on the campaign and 1-1 in the region.

DeKalb County will travel to Macon County next Friday, October 4th. Kick-off is set at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage. Macon County is 4-1 with its only loss being to Upperman 35 to 34. Macon County is scheduled to host Cumberland County tonight (Friday).

DeKalb County took the lead with 8:38 left in the 1st period on an 8-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Parker to Wyatt Carter completing a 60-yard drive. Adrian Prater came on for the extra point and the Tigers held a 7-0 lead.

The Panthers scored with 7:01 left in the 1st period on a 54-yard touchdown run by Maddox Oquendo. The extra point attempt was no good and Stone Memorial trailed 7 to 6.

The Tigers later began a drive from their 44-yard line, but Parker threw an interception near midfield which was returned by Stone Memorial to the DC 22-yard line. A 10-yard penalty set the Panthers back to the 32-yard line. Quarterback Noah Potter completed the drive on a 9-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion try failed but Stone Memorial took a 12-7 lead with 7:34 left in the 2nd period.

DeKalb County regained the advantage on an 8-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Parker to Jon Hendrix with only two seconds left until halftime capping a 76-yard drive. Cecil Ketchum scored on the 2-point conversion run to give the Tigers a 15 to 12 lead at intermission.

In the second half, the Tigers lined up to punt after a stalled drive at their own 24-yard line, but the snap sailed over Adrian Prater’s head, and he downed it at the DC 12-yard line. Quarterback Noah Potter then scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to grab an 18 to 15 lead for the Panthers with 3:20 left in the 3rd period. The extra point attempt was no good.

The Panthers extended their lead with 10:41 left in the 4th period on a 49-yard touchdown run by Maddox Oquendo completing an 80-yard drive. Again, the extra point try was no good, but Stone Memorial led 24 to 15.

The last score of the night came on a 21-yard touchdown run by Maddox Oquendo capping a 90-yard drive. The extra point by kicker Kayne Bosanko was good and Stone Memorial went onto claim a 31 to 15 victory.

The DeKalb Saints battled the Avery Trace Red Raiders into four overtimes before claiming a 26 to 18 victory for the Championship of the Upper Cumberland Conference Thursday night in Cookeville completing an undefeated 10-0 season. It was their first conference title since 2018. Avery Trace finished the year at 9-1 as the defending conference champion.

Avery Trace took the lead with 6:10 left in the 1st period on a 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Xavier Wendell to Colt Reese completing a 4 play 42-yard drive. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good. The score was 6-0 in favor of the Red Raiders.

The Saints tied the game on a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Collin Donnell to Gavin Frazier capping a 9 play 92-yard drive with 36 seconds left in the 2nd period. The 2-point conversion attempt failed but the score was 6-6.

Avery Trace regained the lead on a 13-yard touchdown run by Davin Morton with 3:05 left in the 3rd period completing a 10 play 66-yard drive. The 2-point conversion try failed but the Red Raiders were up 12-6.

The Saints again tied the game on a 4-yard touchdown run by Reed Midgett early in the 4th period capping a 7 play 53-yard drive. The 2-point conversion attempt failed and the score at the end of regulation was 12-12.

Neither team scored in the 1st overtime but in the 2nd OT Quarterback Collin Donnell scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to give the Saints an 18-12 lead. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.

Avery Trace tied the game at 18-18 in the 2nd overtime on a Colt Reese 5-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversation try failed.

Neither team scored in the 3rd overtime but in the 4th OT the Saints took the lead for good on a 10-yard touchdown run by Gavin Frazier. Collin Donnell scored on the 2-point conversion run to give the Saints a 26-18 lead.

The Saints then held on defense to claim the victory and the conference championship

Making the All-Conference team for the DeKalb Saints were Levi Cripps, Reed Midgett, Collin Donnell, Gavin Frazier and William Soto.

The Alexandria Police Department has three new officers.

During Tuesday night’s regular monthly meeting, the Alexandria Aldermen hired a full time and two part time officers at the request of Chief Kenneth (K.D.) Smith.

Max Goodpasture of Clarkrange has 35 years of law enforcement experience. He is retired from the Fentress County Sheriff’s Department and formerly served as Police Chief at Gainesboro. He will be serving in a full-time role.

Vincent Turocy of Hendersonville has a law enforcement background spanning 27 years. He is a retired lieutenant with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (Nashville District) and will be working part time.

John Jenkins has been in law enforcement for 25 plus years. He served as a full-time officer with the Gordonsville Police Department. Jenkins will serve in a part time position with the Alexandria Police Department and part time with DeKalb EMS.

During the meeting, City Attorney Vester Parsley administered the oath of office to the new police officers.

Veronica Dodge of Sparta, hired last month as a police officer, has already resigned.
