Two Airlifted After Crash Saturday Night Near Hurricane Bridge

Five people were involved in a two-vehicle crash Saturday night on Highway 56 at Craft Center Drive near Hurricane Bridge. Two of the wreck victims were airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital by helicopter ambulance.

30-year-old Victoria Loudermilk of Cookeville was driving south on Highway 56 in a 2002 GMC Yukon SUV when she crossed the center line and struck a northbound 2013 Honda Odyssey Mini-Van driven by 70-year-old Michael Shaefer of Munford, Tennessee. Impact was made at an angle, left front corner to left front corner.

Both Loudermilk and Shaefer were believed to have been seriously injured and were airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

Passengers with Shafer, 56-year-old Teresa Carey of Bean Station, Tennessee and 66-year-old Janie Marshall of Morristown were thought to have suffered minor injuries. 70-year-old Marjorie Shaefer was not injured according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

All five were wearing their seatbelts.

Members of the DeKalb County Fire Department’s Extrication and Rescue Team were summoned and extricated a patient from each vehicle. The Putnam County Rescue Squad, finishing up a call in the Silver Point area, offered and came to assist with mutual aid on one of the vehicles involved in the crash.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and DeKalb EMS were also on the scene.

The crash was investigated by Trooper Rory Comardelle of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

A Veterans Day observance will be held Friday, November 11 at the DeKalb County Complex auditorium sponsored by The American Legion and Ladies’ Auxiliary Post 122. Patriotic music will be featured at 9:30 a.m. by Susan Hinton with the program following at 10 a.m.

The ceremony will start with the presentation of colors by the 1377th Bobby Ray Detachment Marine Corps; Pledge of Allegiance led by Ronnie Redmon, Post 122 Adjutant; National Anthem by the DCHS Band and DCHS Chorus; Prayer by Larry Green, Chaplain of Post 122.

Judy Redmon, President of the American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary will introduce the guest speaker, Bill Rutherford, Veteran Service Officer for DeKalb County and the American Legion.

Following the program, the group will gather at the courthouse downtown for the placement of a wreath, prayer by Don Rigsby, and the playing of “Taps” at the site of the veterans memorial monument.

Lunch for veterans and their families, band and chorus members will be served after the ceremony sponsored by Senior Citizens Director Pam Redmon; the American Legion Post 122 and Ladies Auxiliary, and the Woodmen of the World represented by Tom Bumbalough.

A special thanks to Jan Thomas for decorations, Director of Schools Patrick Cripps and School Transportation Supervisor Michael Agee for authorizing transportation from the county complex to the courthouse for the veterans, Sheriff Patrick Ray, Smithville Police Chief Mark Collins, and DeKalb EMS Director Hoyte Hale for their cooperation and to all county officials in attendance.

The DeKalb County Tigers made a quick exit from the TSSAA Class 4A Football Play-Offs with a 21-14 loss to the East Hamilton Hurricanes at Ooltewah Friday night.

The season for the Tigers comes to a close with a record of 6-5 while the Hurricanes (8-3) will advance next Friday, November 11 hosting the Upperman Bees (9-2) who defeated Chattanooga Central 34-7 in the first round of the play-offs Friday night.

An injury to quarterback Jordan Parker prior to the game limiting his ability to throw effectively forced the Tigers to rely on the ground game and a knee injury to talented offensive lineman Ean Jones sidelined him during the game.

Still, the Tigers controlled the time of possession keeping the ball for 37:05 minutes of the 48-minute game and star running back Colby Barnes racked up 327 yards on 55 carries with one touchdown.

DeKalb County scored first with 3:46 left in the 1st period on a 37-yard touchdown run by Malachi Trapp completing a 98-yard drive. Kicker Juan Ortega added the extra point and the Tigers led 7-0.

East Hamilton scored on a Tiger turnover with 10:57 left in the 2nd period after a botched snap. Zachariah Laboo scooped it up for the Hurricanes and returned 64 yards to even the game up at seven after the PAT by Spencer Payne.

The Hurricanes took the lead with 3:26 left in the 2nd period on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Juan Bullard to Kirreeese Willis. Payne booted the extra point and East Hamilton led 14-7.

Colby Barnes scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 11:53 left in the 4th period capping a 58-yard drive and with Ortega’s PAT the game was tied at 14-14.

The Hurricanes then took the lead for good with 10:31 left in the game on a 26-yard touchdown run by Juan Bullard completing a 65-yard drive. Payne added the extra point and East Hamilton went on to claim a 21-14 victory.
