Woman Murdered One Week Ago to be Laid to Rest

The woman murdered in her home one week ago will soon be laid to rest.

The funeral for 39-year-old Yuri Lidia Guerra Desirena of Smithville and a native of Mexico will be Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Smithville First Assembly of God with visitation Thursday 2 PM until 5 PM. Following the service, she will be taken back to Mexico for burial. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Meanwhile, her boyfriend, 35-year-old Simon Rodriguez Martinez remains in jail without bond until his preliminary hearing on October 11. The District Public Defenders Office will represent him.

Martinez is charged with first degree murder in the death of Desirena by allegedly repeatedly hitting her in the head with a hammer at their home at 620 South Mountain Street early Wednesday morning, September 21 in the presence of three children.

The case is being investigated by the Smithville Police Department, TBI, and District Attorney General’s Office.




DCHS Celebrating Homecoming This Week

It’s homecoming at DeKalb County High School and spirit week activities are scheduled each day Monday through Friday including a parade on Friday, September 30 from the school to downtown and the DCHS
Homecoming Football Game against Livingston Academy Friday night at 7 p.m.

Friday Parade Schedule:
12 noon- Parade lines up

12:30 p.m.- Parade leaves DCHS

12:30 p.m. Band performs at Northside Elementary School

1:00 p.m. Band arrives at Smithville Elementary School

1:20 p.m.- Parade arrives at Northside Elementary School. Band leads the parade from Northside Elementary to downtown

1:40 p.m. Parade arrives on the public square Followed by pep rally and band performance on the square.

FCCLA is sponsoring the Homecoming Business Decorating Competition again this year.  Help support our Tigers and our community by decorating your business the week of homecoming.  Please have the attached form completed and submitted by noon on WednesdaySeptember 28th.  FCCLA members will be by after school on ThursdaySeptember 29th to vote and the winner will be announced at the Pep Rally on the square.  The winning business will be treated to dessert the following week compliments of FCCLA.  Thanks for your support of our Tigers, School, and Students! Season Ends for DCHS Golfers in Region Tournament

The DeKalb County High School Golf Team concluded their season on Monday.

In the Division I AA Region 4 Tournament, held at the Golden Eagle Golf Course in Cookeville, Alison Poss shot an 84 to finish tied for 8th out of 24 golfers. Brayden Summers shot an 81 to finish tied for 19th out of 40 golfers.

“Brayden is a junior and I really think he has a good chance to qualify for state next year if he keeps improving. Alison is a sophomore and has a good chance to go to state in her next two years. They are just awesome to work with,” said coach John Pryor.

Cookeville won the boys’ tournament with a team total of 289 and Joseph Agee of Cookeville won the tournament with a 66. Also qualifying for the State Tournament was Tyler Williamson from Greenbrier with a 66, Maddox Crowder (defending state champ) from Macon County with a 69, and Jaxon Reed from Cumberland County with a 69. Cookeville also won the girls’ tournament with a team total of 149. Lauren Slatten of Warren County won the tournament with a 69. Also qualifying for state was Reese Rexroat of Beech High School with a 77 and Meredith Eller of Wilson Central with an 80.
