Mayor reminds city residents of hotline to report property maintenance violations

Complaints have been on the rise lately of people not keeping their properties up to snuff in the City of Smithville.

In fact, Mayor Josh Miller said there have been so many complaints in recent days that he has decided to put out a reminder of a hotline the city has just for this purpose.

“Quite a few people are calling about property maintenance violations within the city. I just want everybody to remember we have a property maintenance complaint line set up and that number is 615-684-4852 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for text messaging only. No one will answer that line. It is only to text a picture and address of the property you consider to be in violation. We do not have a full-time codes enforcement department to monitor this problem so we must rely on the public to report to us. When a violation has been identified, we will send out a certified letter to the landowner and once we get it back after they have signed for it, they have 10 days to get their property cleaned up or 30 days if it pertains to junked cars. After 10 days or 30 days for junked cars we will send a police officer out to look at it to make sure the property has been cleaned. If not, further action will be taken,” said Mayor Miller.

Complainants will remain anonymous, and all complaints will be investigated.

Greeted by cheering youngsters, the DeKalb County High School Class of 2022 paid a call on Smithville Elementary and DeKalb West Schools for the Annual Senior Walk today (Thursday).

Administrators and staff at each school joined the younger students in welcoming the soon to be graduates upon their arrival by school bus. Many of the elementary kids, lined down the halls, greeted the seniors with signs, waves and high fives as the high school students passed by. Some seniors also got hugs from proud parents and former teachers.

The Senior Walk is an opportunity for high school students to return to the elementary campuses where they once attended school to stroll through the hallways in their caps and gowns while the Graduation Pomp and Circumstance (song) is played over the P.A. While we hope this will inspire our future graduates, we are excited about our seniors being able to see their elementary school teachers one last time before they graduate,” said DCHS Principal Bruce Curtis.
