Almost a year ago a 28 year old Smithville woman lost her life in a two car crash on Highway 70 at Liberty and the man believed to have been at fault has been indicted by the DeKalb County Grand Jury.
Last Friday sealed indictments were returned by the Grand Jury charging 31 year old Raymond Howard Rollins of Smithville with driving under the influence, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and two counts of vehicular homicide involving the same victim, Amanda L. Smith. He is accused of reckless conduct and being intoxicated while driving which resulted in the death of Smith and causing 37 year old Charlie Ray Holman to fear imminent bodily inury.
Rollins is under a $100,000 bond and he will be arraigned in criminal court December 10.
The crash occurred on December 13, 2018.
According to the accident report filed by Trooper Chris Delong of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Smith and Rollins were in a white 1998 Ford Mustang traveling west in the eastbound lanes and struck a 2014 Honda Accord, driven by Charlie R. Holman of Sparta who was eastbound in the right hand lane. As Holman attempted to swerve left to avoid a collision, the right front end of the Mustang struck his car on the passenger side. Both Rollins and Holman sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash
DeKalb EMS performed CPR on Smith at the scene and transported her to Ascension Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A helicopter ambulance had been summoned but was later cancelled.
Members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene.

James Hendrixson is the new Director of the DeKalb County Community Complex.
The county commission Monday night by a voice vote accepted the recommendation of the parks and recreation committee to hire Hendrixson. Seventh District Commissioner Bruce Malone voted no.
Fourth District member Dr. Scott Little, Chairman of the parks and recreation committee, made the motion and Seventh District member Beth Pafford offered a second to the motion.
“The committee met November 7 to re-interview the top two candidates for the position of director. The committee agreed that both candidates were very qualified, had great interviews, and are each in their own way an asset to the complex. After careful consideration of all factors the committee recommends James Hendrixson for the position of Director of the DeKalb County Community Complex,” said Dr. Little.
Hendrixson has been a part time employee at the Complex for almost four years.
