Saturday Night Benefit Set for Phillip and Clara Wilkey

A Benefit Dessert Auction for Phillip and Clara Wilkey will be Saturday, September 28 starting at 6 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex at 712 South Congress Boulevard, Smithville sponsored by the Smithville-DeKalb County Rescue Squad.

This benefit is to help with expenses incurred during recent hospital stays and continuing treatment.

“Phillip has been employed with the City of Smithville for over 30 years and he’s been with the Rescue Squad for several years as well. He’s the type to be the first to help but he’s the absolute last person to ask for help. They have tremendous medical bills and we are trying to help them out,” said a spokesperson.

If you would like to donate a dessert and if you would like for it to be picked up, please contact Captain Dustin Johnson at 615-598-2080 or any Rescue Squad member.

Students at DeKalb County High School showed their “Black & Gold” Tiger Pride Friday afternoon for all the community to see during the 2019 Homecoming Day Parade.

The motorcade, featuring class and club floats, Homecoming queen Malia Stanley and her court, the Tiger football, basketball, and soccer teams, Mr and Miss DCHS Isaac Cross and Emme Colwell, decorated automobiles, emergency vehicles, and more made its way from the high school down West Broad Street and then to South Congress Boulevard over to Smithville Elementary School and then north on Congress Boulevard to Northside Elementary where the DCHS band joined the parade enroute to the public square. The parade concluded with a brief performance by the band and a pep rally led by the Tiger Football Cheerleaders.

The Sophomore Class won first place in the float competition with the theme “Victory and Beyond-This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Tigers and Lions”

Second place went to the FFA Club with the theme “Tiger Trail-Can You Survive”?

The Freshman Class took third place for “Lasso the Lions”

In the best dressed vehicle category, Justin Johnson won first place. Allison Young took second place and Kenzie France got third place. Skylar Fuson received honorable mention.

Students at DeKalb County High School have been celebrating Homecoming with Spirit Week activities and it will conclude today (Friday) with a parade and a football game tonight as the Tigers host the Cannon County Lions.

Tiger Talk September 27

The homecoming parade begins lining up at 12:30 p.m. today (Friday) at the high school and will depart at 12:45 p.m. The band will perform at Northside Elementary School at 12:45 p.m. The parade will arrive at Smithville  Elementary School at 1 p.m. and then at 1:20 p.m. at Northside Elementary. From there the band will lead the parade to the public square. The parade will arrive downtown Smithville at 1:50 p.m. followed by a pep rally and a band performance.

Both DeKalb and Cannon County enter tonight’s game at 2-3 overall. The Tigers have losses to Warren County 35 to 21, Upperman 35 to 0, and Watertown 42-20 and wins over Stone Memorial 33-0 and Grundy County 49-12.

Cannon County has losses to White County 17 to 6, Sequatchie County 34 to 21, and Upperman 39 to 6. The Lions have defeated Warren County 20 to 7 and Community 53 to 14.

DeKalb County leads the all time series with Cannon County with 29 wins versus 5 losses and a tie and while the Tigers lost to the Lions last year Cannon County had to forfeit due to an ineligible player. Counting the forfeit win, the Tigers have won the last 11 meetings.

Coach Trapp says Cannon County has a similar look from last year.

“It’s the same offense we saw last year with some different wrinkles and some different position players out there. It’s not anything we haven’t seen before but they have changed their defensive scheme a little bit but again it’s not something we haven’t seen. I feel we have had a good week of preparation and this should be a really good football game tonight,” said Coach Trapp.

Kick-off will be tonight at 7 p.m.

WJLE’s pre-game shows begin with “Coach to Coach” at 5 p.m. featuring former coaches Doug Matthews, Dave McGinnis, and broadcaster Larry Stone.

“Murphy’s Matchups” airs at 6 p.m. featuring the Guru of Tennessee High School Football Murphy Fair.

“Tiger Talk” begins at 6:30 p.m. featuring DCHS Coach Steve Trapp and Tiger Football Players Colby Barnes, Aiden Curtis, and Isaac Cross. John Pryor, the Voice of the Tigers, is the host of the program.

WJLE’s “LIVE” play by play coverage starts at 7 p.m. with the Voice of the Tigers John Pryor and Luke Willoughby.
