First Hemp Fest Sets Roots for Yearly End-of-Summer Celebration
September 8, 2019

The first Middle of Somewhere Hemp Fest drew crowds from DeKalb and surrounding counties to the scenic grounds of Bert Driver Nursery in Smithville Labor Day weekend.
“We exceeded expectations in attendance, participation of CBD producers, and attracting those interested in learning about hemp’s potential as a cash crop,” reports event sponsor Bert Driver. “Most of all, Hemp Fest was a celebration with the emphasis on local — our great outdoors, area artists and craft breweries, and the Upper Cumberland’s CBD entrepreneurs.”
The weather cooperated for a perfect day to reconnect with old friends and make new ones, wander the booths, or just sit back and enjoy live music playing on the Redbud stage with an evening performance by headliners Blue Mother Tupelo.
Those there to learn about hemp sat in on a presentation by Katy Kilbourne, state plant pathologist and inspector with Tennessee’s Department of Agriculture. She discussed Tennessee’s hemp industry, and the state’s inspection process.
“I just want to thank everyone who helped give Hemp Fest such a great start, and all the area media, especially WJLE and the Smithville Review here in DeKalb County, who spread the word,” says Driver.
“We ’re already looking for ways to make Hemp Fest a bigger, better event next year.”

DeKalb County Quarterback Axel Aldino threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more TD’s in leading the Tigers to a 33-0 victory over the Stone Memorial Panthers Friday night. It was the first home game of the season for the Tigers, their first victory and region win of the year, and the Tiger defense’s first shutout in 2019.
DeKalb County is now 1-2 (1-0) on the season. Stone Memorial slips to 1-2 (0-1).
For almost the entire first half the Tigers and Panthers were locked in a scoreless tie. But on the last play, DC’s Desmond Nokes scored on a 34 yard pass play from quarterback Axel Aldino to give the Tigers a 7-0 halftime lead after the PAT by Alan Munoz.
The Tigers struck again on another big play with 10:07 left in the 3rd period as Aldino found Alan Munoz on a 48 yard touchdown pass play. Munoz tacked on the extra point to give DeKalb County a 14-0 lead.
The Tigers extended their lead with 4:37 left in the 3rd period on a 4 yard touchdown run by Aldino. The PAT attempt by Munoz was no good but DeKalb County led 20-0.
After an Isaac Knowles interception, his second of the game, the Tigers drove for another score. Nathaniel Crook crossed the goal line on a 3 yard touchdown run with 11:23 left in the 4th period. Munoz converted the PAT and the Tigers led 27-0.
Aldino added another touchdown with 6:41 left in the game on a 16 yard run. The PAT try by Munoz was no good but DeKalb County led and went on to win 33-0.

Dump Truck Driver Airlifted After Rollover Wreck

A truck driver was airlifted Thursday after his dump truck overturned spilling its load of gravel on Dale Ridge Road (Highway 96).
Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said 81 year old Harold Shores of Silver Point was driving north when his 2007 Sterling dump truck ran off the right side of the road and then came back onto the highway. As Shores overcorrected, the truck overturned and struck a utility pole before coming to rest on its side in the roadway.
A helicopter landing zone was set up on Highway 70 where Shores was airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital
