Tennessee General Assembly to Honor DCHS Tiger Basketball Star Conner Close

The Tennessee General Assembly is poised to pay tribute to a DeKalb County High School basketball standout.

State Representative Michael Hale has introduced a House Joint Resolution to honor Conner Close of the DCHS boys basketball program for his entry to the prestigious 1,000-point club at the school.

The Senior Tiger scored his 1,000th high school career point against Smith County in Smithville on December 12, 2023.

The resolution states as follows:

“WHEREAS it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should recognize those incredibly successful student athletes who have attained significant milestones in their careers; and

WHEREAS, Conner Close, a senior student and basketball player at DeKalb County High School (DCHS), is one such legendary athlete; and

WHEREAS Mr. Close scored his 1,000th career point for the DCHS Tigers in the school’s resounding win over Smith County High School in Smithville on December 12, 2023;

and WHEREAS, in the leadup to the game, Conner Close needed only five points to gain entry to the prestigious DCHS 1,000-point club; less than three minutes into the game, he had done it—scoring the first five points of the contest and etching his name forever in the annals of Tiger basketball history; and

WHEREAS the game was stopped momentarily with 5:42 left in the first period to mark the accomplishment; Coach Joey Agee presented Conner Close a 1,000th point game ball as fellow players, family, friends, and fans gave him a standing ovation; and

WHEREAS Mr. Close finished the night with 15 points and a total of 1,010 for his high school career as the Tigers defeated the Owls 66 to 56; and

WHEREAS, Conner Close has now claimed his rightful place among the most elite basketball players in DeKalb County High School history; and

WHEREAS Mr. Close exemplifies the spirit, determination, and perseverance for which Tennesseans are notable, and he is richly deserving of our approbation on this special occasion; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE CONCURRING, that we honor and congratulate Conner Close of DeKalb County High School on scoring his 1,000th point in varsity basketball and wish him all the best in his future endeavors, both on and off the court”.

Madison Brooke Dawson of Smithville was crowned queen of Saturday’s Valentine Pageant in the 16- to 18-year-old age category. The event, hosted by the Smithville Review, was held at the DeKalb County Complex Auditorium.

Dawson, a senior at DCHS, is the 17-year-old daughter of Jamie and Jarred Dawson.

The pageants featured DeKalb County girls from ages birth to 18 years of age and still in school.

Meanwhile Kenli Faith Fish of Smithville won the crown in the 13–15-year-old category. She is the 13-year-old daughter of Tiffany Pedigo and Cody Fish. Kenli is a 7th grader at DeKalb Middle School. Fish was judged to have the prettiest eyes, hair, and attire, and was named Most Photogenic.

Runners-up in this category were 1st-Karah Jo Ford of Smithville, 13-year-old daughter of Amanda Ford and Hector O’Roscoe; and 2nd Ellabeth Jane Ferrell of Smithville, 14-year-old daughter of Steven Ferrell and Amy Ferrell. Karah Jo Ford was judged to have the prettiest smile.

11-year-old Arraya Jenae Taylor of Smithville and 5th grader at Northside Elementary School claimed the crown in the category for 10–12-year-old girls. She is the daughter of Angie Taylor.

Capturing the crown in the 7–9-year-old division was Rosellen Arleth Garrido of Smithville. She is the 7-year-old daughter of Lorena Juarez and Enrique Garrido. Rosellen is a 2nd grader at Smithville Elementary School.

Runners-up in this category were 1st- Stella Grace Adcock of Smithville, 9-year-old daughter of Byron and Paige Adcock; and 2nd- Alexis Shepherd of Dowelltown, 9-year-old daughter of Donald and Misty Shepherd. Alexis Shepherd was also awarded for prettiest smile and Stella Adcock received the award for prettiest eyes, hair, and attire.

Anna Lee Brelje of Alexandria was crowned queen in the 4–6-year-old category. She is the 5-year-old daughter of Andy and Whitney Brelje. Anna Lee is a pre-school student at Outreach Pre-School.

Runners-up in this division were 1st-Annabelle Bowen of Liberty, 4-year-old daughter of Jacob and Kayla Bowen; and 2nd- Briar Kilgore of Smithville, 5-year-old daughter of Clay and Mariah Kilgore. Annabelle Bowen was judged to have the prettiest eyes.

Meanwhile, Blakely Faith Moore of Smithville, 4-year-old daughter of Scotty and Emily Moore was judged to have the prettiest smile while Serenity Carmen Tiner of Smithville, 5-year-old daughter of Billy and Stephanie Tiner was deemed to have the prettiest attire. Elizabeth Mary Sue Gammons of Smithville was awarded for prettiest hair and for being Most Photogenic. Gammons is the 5-year-old daughter of Amanda Ford.

The winner of the age 25- 48-month category was Elsie Pearl Paschal of Alexandria, the 28-month-old daughter of Justin and Makagan Paschal. Elsie was also judged to have the prettiest attire.

Runners-up in this event were 1st- Sophie Grace Torres of Smithville, 3-year-old daughter of Jose Torres and Brooke Bain; and 2nd-Ruby Soto Perez of Smithville, 3-year-old daughter of Macrina Perez Martinez. Sophie Grace Torres was judged to have the prettiest hair while Ruby Soto Perez was awarded for prettiest smile.

The prettiest eyes honor went to Sydney Ann Barrett of Dowelltown, 2-year-old daughter of Stephen and Vickey Barrett while Taylor Elizabeth Bias of Smithville received the award for Most Photogenic. Bias is the 3-year-old daughter of Jennifer Pyles and Brandon Bias.

Lilly Tuttle of Smithville was crowned queen of the 13-24 month age group. She is the 18-month-old daughter of Trevor and Jacqueline Tuttle. She was also awarded for prettiest smile.

Berkley Era Lee Pettit of DeKalb County won the crown in the 7-12 month old category. She is the 10-month-old daughter of Zach and Taya Pettit. She was also awarded for prettiest eyes.

The winner of the age 1 day to 6-month division was Aniyah Karentyn Loraine Banks of Smithville. She is the 5-month-old daughter of Mackenzie Castorena and Carlos Banks. She was also awarded for prettiest smile, eyes, hair, and attire.

The DCHS basketball teams completed the 2023-24 regular season at Warren County Saturday but lost both games as they now gear up for the district tournament this week. Details of the tournament to be announced.

The Tigers lost to the Pioneers 62 to 46 while the Lady Tigers were defeated by Warren County 61 to 58.

In the earlier meetings on December 8, the Tigers beat Warren County 61 to 53 while the Lady Tigers won 70 to 59.

The Tigers completed the season at 10-18 overall and 1-9 in the district. The Lady Tigers finish at 9-19 overall and 0-10 in district play.

In the girls game Saturday afternoon, both teams played to a 14 all tie by the end of the 1st period. Warren County led 32 to 31 by halftime and extended their lead to 47 to 42 by the end of the 3rd period before holding off the Lady Tigers in the 4th period enroute to a 61 to 58 win over DeKalb County.
For the Lady Tigers, Ella VanVranken scored 22, Chloe VanVranken and Tess Barton each with 10, Allie Melton 7, Avery Agee 5, and Cam Branin and Brooke Fuson each with 2.

The Tigers played without the services of Senior Conner Close, who was sidelined with an injury. DeKalb County trailed 19 to 10 after the 1st period and 31 to 21 by halftime. Warren County led 46 to 30 after the 3rd period and went on to defeat the Tigers 62 to 46.

Seth Fuson led the Tigers in scoring with 15 followed by Ian Colwell with 12, Dallas Kirby 8, Jordan Parker 7, and Alex Antoniak and Wyatt Carter each with 2.
