DeKalb Native Nominated for DISH Network Military Hometown Hero of the Year

A DeKalb County native who served 30 years in the military has been nominated for Dish Network’s Hometown Hero of the year.

First Sergeant Patricia Canerdy, a graduate of DeKalb County High School, served in the US Army from 1979 until her retirement in 2009. She now resides in Alabama. Canerdy is among five military nominees for the honor

Voting online continues through December 31.

“With DISH, you can watch dozens of movies and shows starring superheroes. But in the real world, heroes don’t always get the recognition they deserve. With DISH’s Hometown Heroes program, we’re trying to change that. From coaches to educators, military vets to healthcare workers and first responders, DISH wants to recognize the hometown heroes that are changing the world one community at a time,” according to a DISH Network press release

“At DISH, we know military members sacrifice a lot to serve our country and our communities. It’s time to give them the thanks (and the salute) they deserve,” the statement continued.

Throughout the year, DISH honors Hometown Heroes in a variety of categories. In addition to Military Member or Veteran of the Year, DISH honors the First Responder/ Healthcare Worker of the Year; and Educator of the Year.

The pride of recognition isn’t all these heroes will be receiving. Each recipient will also get a prize package worth more than $6,400 in value.

In nominating Patricia for the honor, her husband Donald wrote “1,000 words cannot begin to tell my hero’s story. She served 30 years in the Army, was a veteran of Desert Storm and Iraq. She juggled taking care of an entire transportation unit of Soldiers, me and our 3 sons. She retired in 2009 and her serving, loving heart never rests. Her old soldiers still call her and ask her advice. She volunteers countless hours at the church, cooks meals for anyone she thinks is hungry, makes quilts for babies she will never see or hold, has crocheted thousands of hats so people can stay warm, helps veterans with filling out paperwork, making appointments, or just chatting with one that’s having a hard time. She is the shoulder that so many have relied on when they needed to cry but sucks it up and marches on when she has needed to cry herself. All the times she was away from home we never felt alone cause she was always sending us messages telling you how much she loved and missed us. I wish you could look at her army records and talk to her soldiers”.

DeKalb County’s share of local option sales tax collections for November 2022 outperformed the same month in 2021 by over $8,700 according to the Tennessee Department of Revenue. For the county and the four cities therein, combined collections were up by more than $27,000.

DeKalb County brought in $148,681 in November 2022 compared to $139,926 for November 2021.

Three of the four cities within DeKalb County also hauled in more local option sales tax revenue. Alexandria was the exception.

The comparisons between the two months for each municipality are as follows:

Smithville: $348,774 (November 2022), $326,672 (November 2021)

Alexandria: $22,904 (November 2022), $27,858 (November 2021)

Dowelltown: $3,246 (November 2022), $2,886 (November 2021)

Liberty: $13,991 (November 2022), $12,727 (November 2021)

NET COLLECTIONS (LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX): $537,597 (November 2022), $510,071 (November 2021)

After losing their first game of the Adidas Shootout at Murfreesboro Riverdale Monday to Mount Juliet 63 to 59, the DeKalb County Tigers breezed past the Memphis School of Excellence on Tuesday winning 60 to 21.

The Tigers (8-4) will now be off for the holidays. Their next game will be on Tuesday, January 3 at Livingston Academy.

In the game Tuesday, the Tigers were in command from the start leading 26 to 6 after the 1st period, 40 to 11 at halftime, and 52 to 14 after the 3rd period before notching a 60 to 21 victory.

Conner Close led the Tigers in scoring with 19 points followed by Elishah Ramos and Robert Wheeler each with 10, Zack Birmingham 7, Kaleb Spears 6, Seth Fuson 4, and Alex Antoniak and Ian Colwell each with 2.

Meanwhile the DCHS Lady Tigers will compete in the Renasant Bank Christmas Tournament at Maryville December 27-30. The Lady Tigers will first see action in that tournament against McMinn Central on Tuesday, December 27 at 4 p.m. (eastern time). WJLE will be unable to broadcast the game LIVE.
