DeKalb County Loses Heartbreaker at Macon County

The DeKalb County Tigers dropped their first game of the season Friday night losing to Macon County at Lafayette 32 to 29.

The Tigers (1-1) and 0-1 in region play will travel to Watertown (1-2) Friday night, September 10. Kick-Off will be at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage.

Macon County struck first with 52 seconds left in the 1st period after Cameron Houston picked off a DC Quarterback Briz Trapp pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. Bryson Higgins added the PAT and Macon County led 7-0.

DeKalb County tied the game at 7-7 with 9:12 left in the 2nd period as Colby Barnes scored on a 17 yard touchdown run capping a 56 yard Tiger drive. Axel Aranda tacked on the extra point.

On the ensuing kick-off after the DC touchdown, Cameron Houston raced 80 yards to put Macon County back on top 13-7 with 8:57 left in the 2nd period.

DC mishandled the ensuing kick-off and Macon County recovered at the DeKalb County 35 yard line. Macon County QB Braydee Brooks then found Cameron Houston on a 25 yard touchdown pass. The PAT attempt by Higgins was no good but Macon County extended its lead to 19-7 with 6:37 left in the 2nd period.

DeKalb County answered with 4:57 left in the first half on a 17 yard touchdown run by Isaac Knowles on a reverse completing a 57 yard Tiger drive and with Aranda’s extra point DC trailed 19-14.

DC grabbed the lead for the first time with 11:45 left in the 4th period as Quarterback Briz Trapp hooked up with John Ellis on a 28 yard touchdown pass. A 2 point conversion by Isaac Knowles was good and DeKalb County pulled ahead 22-19.

Macon County moved back out front 25-22 on a 63 yard touchdown scoring pass play from Braydee Brooks to Cameron Houston with 10:03 left in the 4th period. The PAT try by Higgins was no good.

DeKalb County took the lead again with 6:41 left in the game as Quarterback Briz Trapp scored on a 4 yard keeper. Axel Aranda added the extra point and DC led 29-25.

Macon County mounted a 75 yard drive late in the game and scored on 9 yard touchdown pass from Braydee Brooks to Zach Borders. Higgins converted the PAT and Macon County went on to claim a 32-29 victory.

The DeKalb County Tigers, who won their first ever regular season region football championship last year, will begin their quest for another one tonight (Friday) as they open the region portion of their schedule at Macon County.

The Tigers defeated the Smith County Owls in the season opener 33-14 last week in Smithville

Macon County enters tonight’s game at 2-0 with wins over East Robertson 34-12 and Westmoreland 14-6.

Although the Tigers played well for the most part against the Owls, Tiger Coach Steve Trapp said the team had a few too many mistakes.

“I really liked the effort our guys played with and that’s one thing we tell them all the time that we should never have to question. I thought they played extremely hard and got their minds right but there were some negatives with it being the first game of the year. Anytime there is a penalty before the whistle its not good and we had a few of those on offense and a couple of bad snaps and a turnover here and there but we got some of those back on defense as well. I expect to see all that cleaned up this week. We’ve had a good week of preparation and I’m anxious to see these guys get out here tonight and play with even more enthusiasm and determination than last week,” said Coach Trapp.

As for Macon County, “They are always going to play hard. They have that unique scheme of the wing-t so it makes it hard to prepare for because we do things totally different and our scout team has to buy into a whole new offensive philosophy to get us a good look and things we have to do defensively are not the norm but our guys have prepared hard all week long for tonight and the opportunity we have. We understand the importance of this game but we feel every game is important so our main focus is doing our job the correct way on every snap,” added Coach Trapp.

The 2021 DeKalb Saints Homecoming Queen Addyson Grace Swisher was crowned Thursday night during a program held prior to the game with White County at the DCHS football field.

The Saints lost 28-6 and drop to 2-3 on the season. Jon Hendrix scored on an 18 yard quarterback keeper for the Saints.

Swisher is the 13 year old daughter of Iain and Kassy Swisher. Her escorts were Wyatt Carter, 8th grade captain, holder and offensive linebacker, son of Jeff and Amanda Carter; and Hunter Buchanan, 8th grade captain, wide receiver and cornerback, son of Matthew and Rachel Buchanan.

Swisher is an active member of Relentless Student Ministries at Smithville AG. She represented the state of Tennessee and ranked Top 10 nationally at the Assembly of God Fine Arts Festival. Addyson has cheered for the DeKalb Middle School basketball cheer squad for 3 years and proudly serves as captain. She was chosen as an All American cheerleader by the National Cheerleading Association and also received the pin it award from the NCA, She is a member of Jr. Beta and received the 2019 golden ticket. Swisher enjoys gymnastics, dance and acting.

7th grade DeKalb West School attendant Kenadee Rose Prichard is the daughter of Luke and Jodee Prichard of Alexandria. Her escorts were Jaxon Kleparek, 8th grade tackle and defensive end, son of Dylan and Latonya Kleparek; and Bradley Hale, 8th grade guard and linebacker, son of Craig Hale and Katherine Poss.

Prichard has been a DeKalb West School basketball player for 3 years. She is a DWS Junior Beta member and is very involved in her church and youth activities.

7th grade DeKalb Middle School attendant Brooklyn Fuson is the daughter of William and Sarah Fuson. She was escorted by Turner Bryant, 8th grade guard and linebacker, son of Neal and Kathy Bryant; and Bryson Arnold, 8th grade guard and nose tackle, son of Dennis and Gina Arnold.

Fuson has been a DMS softball and basketball player for 2 years. She enjoys hanging out with friends and going to the lake. Brooklyn is also an active member of the Smithville First Assembly of God. When she is finished with school, Brooklyn wants to play fast pitch softball for Tennessee Tech, while studying to become an RN.

7th grade DeKalb Middle School attendant Brylee Kirby is the daughter of Chad and Shelia Kirby. She was escorted by Devin Fish, 8th grade wide receiver and cornerback, son of Danny and Nicole Fish; and Kaleb Gomez, 8th grade wide receiver and free safety, son of Miguel and Dulce Jaquez.

Kirby is a football manager and a basketball cheerleader. Brylee was selected as an All-American cheerleader during summer camp by the National Cheerleaders Association and will be performing in the Thanksgiving Day parade at Walt Disney World this year as part of that honor. She is a member of the Smithville First Baptist Church where she loves spending time with her youth group, and she also enjoys her tumbling classes at Infinity Athletics. Kirby is a member of the Student Council and the Jr. Beta Club.

8th grade DeKalb West School attendant Autumn Grace Dies is the daughter of Keith and Amanda Dies. Her escorts were Connor Hopkins, 8th grade wide receiver and cornerback, son of Jennifer Branin; and Jon Hendrix, 8th grade quarterback and offensive linebacker, son of Bradley and Lori Hendrix.

Dies has been a DeKalb West School Basketball Cheerleader for 2 years. She is a DWS Junior BETA member and she attends the Alexandria First Baptist Church.

8th grade DeKalb Middle School attendant Carleigh Beckham is the daughter of Nikki Beckham. Her escorts were Cole Bain, 8th grade wide receiver and linebacker, son of Lucas and Holly Bain; and Juan Ortega, 8th grade running back and strong safety, son of Margot De Jesus.

Beckham has participated in Junior Beta and Student Council for 3 years. She is Co-Captain for the DMS basketball cheer squad and has been on the squad for 3 years. She has been elected as an All-American Cheerleader by the National Cheerleading Association. Carleigh has also been a football manager for 2 years. She is an active member of her Relentless youth group at Smithville AG. She enjoys tumbling and hanging out with friends, family, and her youth group.

8th grade DeKalb Middle School attendant Brooklyn Blaylock is the daughter of Eric and Kortny Blaylock. Her escorts were Aiden Turner, 8th grade captain, cornerback and linebacker, son of Joshua and Erin Turner; and Jerett Hamilton, wide receiver and defensive end, son of Lynda Hamilton.

Blaylock has been a DMS football cheerleader for 3 years. She has also been an All-star cheerleader for Infinity Athletics for 4 years and enjoys tumbling. Brooklyn is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is also a member of attends the Mount Hope The Baptist Church.
