DCHS Tigerettes Runners-up in Gordonsville Softball Tournament

The DCHS Tigerettes advanced to the championship game of the Gordonsville softball tournament Saturday but lost to Anderson County 3-0 to finish as runners-up in the two day tourney.

The Tigerettes went 4-1 in the tournament beating Cumberland County 8-0 and Gordonsville 3-0 on Friday and defeating Anderson County 5-4 and Watertown 8-3 on Saturday before falling to Anderson County in a rematch for the championship.

In the title game both teams were strong in the pitcher’s circle but Anderson County was just a little bit stronger at the plate. Emma Johnson started the game for the Tigerettes and recorded 15 outs.

A bright spot for DeKalb was a double by Morgan Walker in the first inning.

The winning pitcher for Anderson County went five innings, allowing a three hit shutout. She struck out two and walked none.

Johnson took the loss for the Tigerettes. The right hander went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and she struck out one.

Ellie Cripps, Walker, and Johnson all had one hit to lead the Tigerettes.

In the other Saturday games, the Tigerettes weathered a scare by Watertown in the first inning giving up three runs, but DeKalb County rallied to win 8-3. Abby Cooper and Alie Tunks each had RBIs in the frame for Watertown.

The purple Tigerettes drew first blood in the opening inning when Cooper singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. But the DC Tigerettes pulled away for good with seven runs in the third inning. In the third Aly Griffith singled on a 0-2 count, scoring two runs. Aniston Farler doubled on an 0-2 count, scoring two runs. An error scored one run for DeKalb and Morgan Walker tripled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.

Bri Murphy pitched the DC Tigerettes to victory. The righthander surrendered three runs on five hits over five innings, striking out one and walking one.

Jaina Drennon took the loss for Watertown allowing six hits and six runs over two innings. She struck out one and walked one.

DeKalb County had nine hits in the game including two each from Griffith, Emma Johnson, and Walker. The Tigerettes stole seven bases during the game. Jacey Hatfield led the way with two.
Meanwhile, a walk-off single led DeKalb County past Anderson County 5-4 in their first meeting on Saturday. The game was tied at four with the Tigerettes batting in the bottom of the seventh when Kennedy Polk singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

DeKalb County earned the victory despite allowing Anderson County to score three runs in the sixth inning.

Ellie Cripps was credited with the victory for the Tigerettes. Cripps allowed five hits and four runs over six innings, striking out three and walking one. Bri Murphy threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen and recorded the last three outs to earn the save for the Tigerettes.

The Anderson County losing pitcher lasted six and a third innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out five.

Anderson County smashed two home runs on the day. One player had a four bagger in the second inning while another went for a long ball in the sixth inning.

Murphy led DeKalb County with two hits in two at bats. The Tigerettes were sure-handed with no errors. Madison Martin had the most chances in the field with six.

In the games on Friday, DeKalb County defeated Gordonsville 3-0 as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout.

Emma Johnson notched the win for DeKalb County. She pitched a two hit shutout over four innings, striking out one. Cripps threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen and recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

The Gordonsville losing pitcher went four and a third innings, allowing three runs on two hits and she struck out six.

Morgan Walker and Jacey Hatfield each had a hit to lead the Tigerettes.

Meanwhile Bri Murphy had all the right stuff on Friday pitching DeKalb County to an 8-0 victory over Cumberland County.

The Tigerettes secured the victory thanks in part to a five run second inning led by Morgan Walker, Emma Johnson, Jacey Hatfield, and Aly Griffith, who all drove in runs during the frame.

The DeKalb County offense fired up in the first inning as Hatfield singled to drive in a run. The Tigerettes scored five more runs in the second inning. The offensive onslaught was led by Walker, Johnson, Hatfield, and Griffith, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
Murphy earned the win for the Tigerettes. The righty went five innings, pitching a two hit shutout. She struck out three and walked one.

The losing pitcher for Cumberland County went four innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits, striking out two and walking one.

DeKalb County racked up 12 hits in the game from the bats of Hatfield, Griffith, and Walker. Hatfield got three hits in three at bats.

A Smithville man was seriously injured in a rollover crash this morning (Sunday) on Highway 70 at Dowelltown.

The accident occurred at 12:45 a.m.

According to Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 36 year old Matthew Sullivan was traveling east on Highway 70 in a 2002 Ford 150 when he ran off the right side of the roadway while negotiating a curve. Sullivan’s truck then hit the end of a guard rail causing his vehicle to overturn.

Sullivan was airlifted by helicopter to Tristar Skyline Medical Center

An early morning fire today (Sunday) destroyed two dwellings at a Smithville Housing Authority duplex on Jackson Street resulting in one woman suffering burns. Two dogs perished in the blaze at one of the homes but firefighters were able to rescue a cat at the other residence.

The woman was taken by DeKalb EMS to Ascension St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital where she was airlifted by helicopter to Vanderbilt Hospital. Her name has not yet been released.

Three people in the adjoining residence of the duplex including a man, woman, and child escaped unharmed.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. The blaze apparently started in one of the dwellings and spread to the other.

Central dispatch (911) received the call and paged out firefighters at 4:41 am. Members of the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department, Smithville Police, and DeKalb EMS responded.

“We received a call of a fire at a duplex at 319 and 321 Jackson Street and upon our arrival we could see flames coming through the roof,” said Smithville Fire Chief Charlie Parker.

“Its my understanding that neighbors and bystanders got the woman (who suffered burns) out of her residence at 319 Jackson Street. She was already in an ambulance on the scene when we arrived. Everybody on the other side of the duplex at 321 Jackson Street was also outside upon our arrival and I think they helped get the other lady out of her home” he said.
