Carthage Woman Injured After Car Crashes and Almost Plunges into Creek

A Carthage woman was injured after her car left the road and almost plunged into a creek Thursday afternoon on Highway 96 (Lancaster Road) near Center Hill Dam.

According to Trooper T.J. Withers of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 68 year old Deborah Powell was traveling east in a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze when she failed to negotiate a curve and left the road. The car went into a ditch, over an embankment, and almost into a creek before coming to a stop.

Members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department’s Rescue and Extrication team removed her from the vehicle. Powell was then transported by ambulance to the hospital. Her injuries were not believed to have been life threatening.  The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and US Army Corps of Engineers Rangers were also on the scene.




Owens Sentenced for Vehicular Assault

A man responsible for a serious injury traffic crash in April, 2017 entered a plea to vehicular assault Wednesday in DeKalb County Criminal Court.

64 year old Terry Owens received a four year TDOC sentence to serve 310 days in the DeKalb County Jail and he will lose his driver license for one year. He has been given jail credit of 310 days from April 8, 2017 to February 12, 2018

The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 70 and Evins Mill Road.

Trooper Brent Collier of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said Owens, driving a 1997 Chevy, pulled from Evins Mill Road onto highway 70 into the path of a 2014 Kia Serento, driven by 46 year old Michael Adkins of Crossville who was traveling east on highway 70. 38 year old Tosha Adkins was a passenger. 38 year old Rebecca Pelfrey was a passenger with Owens.

According to the complaint, “Mr. Owens smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking the day of the accident. He was given standardized field sobriety tests at which he performed poorly. Mr. Owens refused to give blood multiple times even after being told about the implied consent law”.

Adkins was not hurt but Ms Adkins was airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital where she was treated and released. Owens and Pelfrey were taken to Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital by DeKalb EMS where they were treated. Pelfrey was released by Owens was taken into custody.

Members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene.




Upper Cumberland Electric Issues Scam Alert Warning

Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation is warning its members about an elaborate scam attempt that is targeting utility customers.  The scam starts with a person calling who states that if you don’t pay your bill immediately, your service will be disconnected.  If you do not pay immediately with your credit card or with a service called “Pay Pac,” they ask you to call “customer service” through another number.

When you hang up and call that number, it becomes a 3-way “conference” call which is routed to the actual customer service department of your utility.  While you’re on the phone with your utility company, the scammers are on the line, listening for any information you give, including your account number, credit card information, and even your bank account number.
