15th annual Habitat Chili Cook-off and Bake Sale October 26

Who makes the best chili in DeKalb County? Find out on Friday, October 26th when Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County hosts its 15th annual Chili Cook-off and Bake Sale.

Chili will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the DeKalb Courthouse Lawn. In case of bad weather, the event will be moved to the DeKalb County Complex. For a cash donation, eat all the chili you want and vote for your favorite chili and the best decorated booth. You be the judge. A limited supply of pottery bowls will be available for $20. Delicious baked goods prepared by members of local churches will also be for sale. Take out is also available.

Awards and bragging rights will be given in the following manner: 1st and 2nd place chili, 1st and 2nd place booth decoration, and People’s Choice Chili (Golden Spoon Award).

To enter submit the organization or business name, address, team name, team captain, phone number and team captain email.

Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity builds and renovates houses in partnership with volunteers and families in need, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Cemetery Preservation Workshop Scheduled

The MTSU Center for Historic Preservation will be conducting a workshop at the historic Town Cemetery in Smithville on Saturday, October 20th.

Center research professor Stacey Graham will present information about historic cemeteries in Tennessee starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Smithville City Hall. Afterwards, participants will learn proper techniques for cleaning tombstones and then experience the hands-on portion of the workshop by scrubbing tombstones themselves.

This event is free, but due to limited supplies, please contact Stacey Graham to register for attendance.

Chamber Holds Ribbon Cutting for D & D Fashions

The Chamber recently had a Ribbon Cutting for D & D Fashions (formerly Dana’s Closet) located at 109 West Main Street in downtown Smithville.

Lots of friends, family, Chamber board members, and local business folks came to show their support for this new business and our growing downtown.  D & D Fashions co-owners are Dana Poss and Donna England. Store hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 AM to 6 PM, Thursdays from 10 AM to 8 PM, and Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM. They carry clothing for Men, Ladies, Girls, and Boys – sizes ranging from Preemie baby clothes to Adult 3XL. Tween sizes and girls’ ruffled Christmas outfits (sizes 2T to 7/8) coming soon!  Everything in the store is $29.99 or less. They also have Gifts, Décor, Jewelry, and Amuse Cosmetics including All-Day Wear products. Their 24-hour Lipsticks are only $1.50 each. New items coming in daily.
