Early Voting In DeKalb County On Pace to Eclipse August Totals

Interest in the November 6 Tennessee General Election is high in DeKalb County and voters are flocking to the ballot box.
A total of 2,433 have cast ballots during the first eleven days of early voting with three days remaining. Early voting has already eclipsed the total number of early voters (1,660) during the mid terms of November 2014 in DeKalb County and is on pace to surpass early voting totals (2,361) during the August, 2018 election. Two years ago in the November 2016 Presidential Election 3,992 voted early in DeKalb County.
Voters will elect a Governor, U.S. Senator, Congressman in the 6th District, State Senator in District 17, and State Representatives in Districts 40 & 46.
Candidates for Governor are Republican Bill Lee and Democrat Karl Dean. Twenty six independents are also in the race for Governor.
U.S. Senate candidates are Republican Marsha Blackburn and Democrat Phil Bredesen. Six independents are also running for the U.S. Senate.
Republican John Rose and Democrat Dawn Barlow are in the race for the U.S. House of Representatives from the 6th Congressional District along with two independents.
Candidates for the State Senate in District 17 are Republican Mark Pody and Democrat Mary Alice Carfi. There are no independents
Republican Terri Lynn Weaver is unopposed for State Representative in District 40
In District 46, Republican Clark Boyd and Democrat Mark Cagle are in the race for State Representative. There are no independents.
According to Administrator of Elections Dennis Stanley, 186 voted Monday (178 in person and 8 by absentee); 192 Saturday (188 in person and 4 by absentee) 165 Friday (162 in person and 3 by absentee); 286 Thursday (281 in person and 5 by absentee); 182 Wednesday (148 in person and 34 by absentee); 210 Tuesday (203 in person and 7 by absentee); 246 Monday (245 in person and 1 by absentee); 214 Saturday (207 in person and 7 by absentee); 263 last Friday (260 in person and 3 by absentee); 259 last Thursday (257 in person and 2 by absentee). Last Wednesday 230 voted (194 in person and 36 by absentee)
The early voting times are as follows through Thursday, November 1:
Monday—1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday—9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Wednesday—9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Thursday—2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Early voting is on the first floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse.
Election day voting on Tuesday, November 6 is 8:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. at all 15 precincts in the county.
Three Members of DCHS Band to take their Final Bow Tonight During Senior Night

Three seniors with the DeKalb County High School Fighting Tiger Marching Band take to the football field for the final time tonight (Oct. 26). In the first part of a three-part series, WJLE talks with Harley Sloan. The daughter of Misty Walden and Darrell Sloan, she has played alto saxophone her final two years of high school. Harley first made her way to the band room thanks to her boyfriend, drum major Axel Rico.
“I’ve always really loved music, but I never knew how to put myself out there to get into it until I met Axel,” Sloan says. “Since he’s been in band, I was around it more, and I’ve enjoyed it ever since.”
Harley was drawn to the sound of the sax.
“I’ve always liked the lower sound I guess you could say,” explains Harley. “It made me like that instrument more than any of the other ones.”
Learning the brass instrument was enjoyable but challenging.
“When I first joined, I didn’t know how to read music, and so I had to memorize everything,” she says. “What was most challenging to me was memorizing all the music and marching with it at the same time. After a few runs, you get the hang of it.”
Sloan says she’s enjoyed practicing the field show and going to the football games with her friends. Although she’ll be departing D-C-H-S next May, she hopes music will still be a part of her life.
“I’m going to college and become a nurse,” says Sloan. “Depending on the college [I attend], maybe I can be in their marching band, hopefully. I love music.”
Tomorrow we’ll feature award-winning drum major Axel Rico. The band travels to Seymour, Tennessee Saturday to play in the Foothills Classic.
15th Annual Habitat Chili Cook-Off and Bake Sale TODAY at County Complex

Who makes the best chili in DeKalb County? Find out today (Friday, October 26th) when Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County hosts its 15th annual Chili Cook-off and Bake Sale.
Chili will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex. The event had been planned outside on the north side of the courthouse grounds but was relocated due to rainy weather.
For a cash donation, eat all the chili you want and vote for your favorite chili and the best decorated booth. You be the judge. A limited supply of pottery bowls will be available for $20. Delicious baked goods prepared by members of local churches will also be for sale. Take out is also available.
Awards and bragging rights will be given in the following manner: 1st and 2nd place chili, 1st and 2nd place booth decoration, and People’s Choice Chili (Golden Spoon Award).
Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity builds and renovates houses in partnership with volunteers and families in need, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
