The DeKalb County Board of Education met in regular monthly session Thursday night to consider a light agenda.

In his monthly personnel report, Director Patrick Cripps announced that Janet Woodward has been granted a leave of absence and Callie Brown has resigned.

The board also approved a request for Vitality Fit to use the DeKalb Middle School facilities at a date to be announced for a cross fit tournament. Board member Jason Miller said it gives Vitality Fit an opportunity to give back to the schools and for the kids to be involved.

The Town of Alexandria has a new Mayor!

During a special called meeting Thursday night, January 12, the town council appointed incumbent Alderman Rusty Bradshaw as Vice Mayor and he will fill the role of Mayor until the next election in August 2024.

The town had been officially without a mayor after the death of Mayor Lloyd Dyer on December 23, 2022.

Alderman Bradshaw was nominated for the position by other board members Thursday night and his appointment was adopted unanimously. The board also voted for Justin Chapman to fill a vacancy as alderman. Both Bradshaw and Chapman will serve in their new positions until the next municipal election in August 2024, which coincides with the DeKalb County General Election.. Mayor Bradshaw was previously appointed as alderman in July 2020 and reappointed in August 2022.

Scammers are at it again and this time its over jury duty!

Smithville Police Chief Mark Collins said several people lately have reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Smithville Police Department. In the call, the scammer tells the intended victim that he or she has failed to answer a summons for jury duty by the police department and are in trouble with the law. However the scammer goes on to tell his victim that the issue may be resolved if they send money.

Chief Collins says this is a scam and the public should not fall for it. According to Chief Collins, the Smithville Police Department does not issue summons for jury duty and no one from the department is making these calls. If you should receive such a call, Chief Collins said you should hang up and then report it to the Smithville Police Department.
