DWS Announces May Students of the Month

DeKalb West School announces the Students of the Month for May. Named for the honor were Aiden Wright, PreK; Braylyn Rice, Kindergarten; Levi Reynolds, 1st grade; Kaden Mullinax, 2nd grade; Sophie Desimone, 3rd grade; Jesse Foutch, 4th grade; Isabella Tarpley, 5th grade; Tyler Jackson, 6th grade; Jaxon Humphrey, 7th grade, and Lane Goss, 8th grade. Students are chosen for the distinction based on traits that make them an excellent student like academic success and good character.

DeKalb Schools Art Exhibit Set for May 25

The DeKalb County Schools Art Exhibit will be Saturday, May 25 featuring art students of DeKalb County from Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade.

The annual event, sponsored by the Smithville Study Club, will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex at 712 South Congress Boulevard.

Last year 10th grader Stephanie J. Atnip won “Best of Show” while Emily Johnson and Ella Kirksey from the Pre-K to 1st grade Division tied for the “People’s Choice Award”. Meanwhile taking 1st place in the category of Original Painting was 7th grader Briley Werpinisky.

Walteen Parker is the President of the club. Susan Hinton is the Art Chairman.




Two Arrested in Theft Investigation at Jewel’s Market

Smithville Police have arrested two men in a theft investigation at Jewel’s Market.

21 year old Adam Michael Whitecotton and 23 year old Matthew Allen White both of 625 Highland Avenue were arrested on April 20 for Theft of Property. Whitecotton was also charged with Criminal Impersonation, Evading Arrest, and Possession of Methamphetamine.

Police were called to Jewell’s Market on South Congress Boulevard on April 19 due to a theft that had occurred and learned that Whitecotton had stolen cell phone accessories from the front counter. During the investigation, officers located Whitecotton at his residence but he identified himself as Dakota. After discovering Whitecotton’s true identity police obtained warrants for his arrest and returned to the residence on April 20. When Whitecotton saw the officers arriving at his home he ran to the kitchen area and hid in the laundry room under a pile of dirty clothes. The officers found Whitecotton and took him into custody. During a search incident to arrest, police found a baggie in his right front pocket which contained a clear substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine. It weighed approximately 0.3 grams. Bond for Whitecotton is $41,500 and his court date is May 9.

White was charged after police learned that he had the stolen property from the store in his possession at the residence. The items were recovered and returned to the owner of the store. Bond for White is $4,500 and his court date is May 9.

32 year old Christopher Eugene Layne of 736 Bright Hill Rd was arrested on April 23 for Public Intoxication. Police were called to the residence to perform a welfare check on an unresponsive man who had been asleep in a pickup for over an hour. Upon arrival police awoke the man, Layne but he was unable to answer questions and refused to cooperative with EMS so he was transported by police to the hospital emergency room where he remained for about 3 hours before being released but he was still in a severely intoxicated state. He was placed under arrest for his own safety. Bond for Layne is $1,500 and his court date is May 9.

34 year old Joshua Lynn McCowan was arrested on April 24 for Possession of Methamphetamine and Violation of Probation. He was also cited for Simple Possession. Police were called to Wal-Mart due to a possible intoxicated person. Upon arrival an officer spoke with the man, McCowan and through a computer check learned that he had a warrant against him for Violation of Probation. Police conducted a search incident to arrest and found in McCowan’s right pants pocket approximately 1.5 grams of a crystal-like substance that field tested positive for Methamphetamine along with a needle containing 5 units of a liquid substance that field tested positive for Methamphetamine. Bond for McCowan is $8,500 and his court date is May 9.

50 year old Baltazar Fransico Pascual of Monterey was cited on April 26 for improper passing of a school bus. Police observed Pascual driving a vehicle that did not stop for a school bus traveling in the opposite direction. The lights on the bus were flashing red and the sign was displayed. Pascual’s court appearance is May 9.

35 year old Brandon Lynn Tallent of 713 West Broad Street was arrested on April 27 for Driving on a Revoked License. Police spotted Tallent driving a truck in the parking lot of Wal-Mart knowing that Tallent’s license were revoked and that he had been arrested four days prior on the same charge by county deputies. Bond for Tallent is $3,000 and his court date is May 16.

27 year old Stephanie Michelle Mooneyham of 633 Restview Avenue was arrested on April 29 for Domestic Assault. Police were called to Mooneyham’s residence and upon arrival spoke with a man who reported that Mooneyham had slapped him on the face over a cigarette. Two other people next door witnessed the assault. Bond for Mooneyham is $3,500 and her court date is May 16.

55 year old Rickey L. Shehane of 309 Wade Street was arrested on April 30 for violating an Order of Protection. While looking for someone else on a separate call, police spotted Shehane at the home of his victim and stopped to speak with him knowing from past checks that Shehane had been under an Order of Protection to keep away from her. A computer check confirmed that the order was still active. He was taken into custody without incident. Bond for Shehane is $5,000 and his court date is May 16.

28 year old Jeremiah Daniel Martin of 425 Kendra Drive was arrested on April 30 for Aggravated Assault. Police were called to the emergency room of the hospital due to a man being treated for a broken jaw. Officers learned that the man and Martin had gotten into a verbal argument that turned physical when the man walked away and Martin punched him in the right side of his face breaking his jaw. A bone from the blow broke through the inside of the victim’s mouth leaving it exposed. Bond for Martin is $10,000 and his court date is May 16.

38 year old Brandon Edward Smith of 557 Cooper Street was cited on May 3 for Simple Possession of Methamphetamine. Smith was arrested on an active warrant and a search incident to arrest revealed him to have 0.2 grams of a clear crystal substance believed to be Methamphetamine. His court date is May 23.
