Five Injured in Monday Crash

Five people were injured in a noon time crash Monday at the intersection of Broad Street and South Mountain Street.

According to Smithville Police, 65 year old Shirley Hale of Liberty was turning left from Broad Street onto South Mountain Street in a 2004 Ford Taurus when she crossed the path of a 2000 GMC pickup truck driven by 35 year old Miguel Galvan of Smithville who was traveling west on Broad Street. 68 year old Mary Bain of Woodbury was a passenger with Hale while 37 year old Erica Ramos and a 2 year old girl were with Galvan. All five were taken to the hospital.

Galvan was charged with no driver license or insurance.

The accident was investigated by Patrolman Andy Snow. DeKalb EMS and members of the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department were also on the scene.

 




Kylee Cantrell Named DeKalb Saints Homecoming Queen

Kylee Cantrell has been named the 2018 DeKalb Saints Homecoming Queen.

An eighth grader at DeKalb Middle School, Cantrell is the daughter of Paul and Michelle Cantrell.

The DeKalb Middle School eighth grade attendants are Morgan Walker, daughter of Jason and Renee Walker; and Carlee West, daughter of D.J. and Megan Stewart.

The DMS seventh grade attendants are Cadee Griffith, daughter of Chris and Jennifer Griffith; and Elaina Turner, daughter of Shane and Regina Turner.

The DeKalb West seventh grade attendant is Kayleigh Overstreet, daughter of Jennifer Johnson and the late Billy Overstreet. The DeKalb West eighth grade attendant is Aly Griffith, daughter of Ron and Mindy Griffith.

The DeKalb Saints football team will host Smith County for homecoming Thursday, August 23 at 6:30 p.m.




Interested In Volunteering?

The Area Agency on Aging and Disability (AAAD) is looking for individuals who are interested in making a difference in the lives of the elderly and disabled in the Guardianship program. These clients live in nursing homes, assisted living centers, and community living support (CLS) homes, many of who receive no regular visitors.

The agency, located in Cookeville, is a part of the Upper Cumberland Development District (UCDD), and serves 14 counties in the Upper Cumberland. Volunteers are needed in Cannon, Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Smith, Van Buren, Warren and White counties.

As a volunteer, you will be assigned to clients who reside in your area. They ask that you spend a minimum of one visit per month visiting; additional visits are left up to the volunteer.  Training and support is provided by the Guardianship conservators and staff.
