Mourners gathered at the gymnasium of DeKalb County High School Friday afternoon to say goodbye to Jerry (Red) Foster during a celebration of life service.
The former basketball coach, star athlete, and physical education teacher at Northside Elementary School passed away Tuesday at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 59 years old.
It was Foster’s request that his memorial be held at the DCHS gym, where he taught school and coached the Lady Tiger basketball program from 1993-2000. School administrators honored the request.
Tributes including photos, flowers, and Foster’s retired high school jersey number were displayed on either side of his coffin at center court facing rows of chairs for those attending the service officiated by Phil Tollett and Bryan Simmons.
Following the service, Foster was laid to rest at the Peeled Chesnut Cemetery
