Want to familiarize yourself with DeKalb County’s new voting machines in advance of the 2024 elections?

Voters will be able to have a “hands-on” experience with the new Microvote voting machines Thursday, August 10, from 2-4 p.m. on the first floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse in Smithville.

“We are going to have a few voting machines set up in ‘demonstration mode’ to allow voters to see the brighter, more colorful screens and see how simple the new machines are to operate,” said Dennis Stanley, Administrator of Elections. “They will also get a first-hand experience with new the Voter Verifiable Paper Trail (VVPAT) aspect of the machines .”

DeKalb County recently purchased the new models with state funding. New machines were required after the Tennessee General Assembly passed a law requiring all voting machines in the state to have a Voter Verifiable Paper Trail device.

“Our local machine technicians and representatives of the Microvote company will be on hand to assist voters and answer questions,” Stanley said.

“No appointment is necessary, just stop in between 2 and 4 p.m. Thursday, August 10th,” he added.

Its hard to believe that a dog as playful and loveable as “Marshall” doesn’t have a forever home.

You can change that by adopting him today!

“Marshall” is the WJLE/DeKalb Animal Shelter featured “Pet of the Week”

“Marshall is a three-and-a-half-year-old mixed breed and he is our longest shelter resident,” said Shelter Director Emmaly Bennett. “ Its coming up on a year now that Marshall has been here with us so we have significantly reduced his adoption fee. We would really like to find him a great home but he has to be the only dog in the household because Marshall wants all the attention. He is neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and is up to date on everything. His adoption fee is only $40. If you don’t have any other pets and are looking for a friend Marshall would be a great choice because he is good with people, great on a leash, and is very playful,” said Bennett.

“If you are interested in adopting Marshall, please check out the adoptable pet’s link on our website to fill out an application at https://www.dekalbanimalsheltertn.com/ and we will call you to come in and meet him,” she said.

The shelter is open Monday-Friday from 8 to 4 and Saturday from 8 to 12 at 186 Transfer Station Road. Phone 615-597-3647.

An 18-year-old was injured in a single vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Big Rock Road.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Chrystyan Tate was traveling south in a 2014 Hyundai Elantra attempting to negotiate a curve to the right when the vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and collided with a fence and a small plastic DTC pole. The car then came to a final rest off the left side of the roadway facing north.

Tate was injured and taken to the hospital by DeKalb EMS. A 17-year-old passenger was not hurt. Both were wearing their seatbelts.

The DeKalb County Sheriff and Fire Departments were also on the scene.
