Another Smithville landmark which many will remember from years ago as the old Knowles Hospital building is coming down.

Demolition began Monday on the 11,000 square foot facility which stood for decades situated on 1.25 acres overlooking Broad Street.

Chad Hale recently purchased the property with plans to re-sell it after the structure is removed. Over the years the building, which has not been in use for some time, has become outdated and damaged by vandals and thieves and it now poses more of a liability risk. A sizeable investment would have been necessary to rehabilitate the building and bring it up to codes. Hale said the property will be more valuable without the building than with it.

For years the building was home to Knowles Hospital until the 1980’s when it became Doctor’s Hospital with a change in ownership. After a while the medical facility ceased operations there. Over time the property has changed hands with different owners and uses.
