Almost 40 years after he coached his last DeKalb County High School basketball game, the late legendary coach Harold Luna is being recognized by the Board of Education.

During Thursday night’s regular monthly meeting, the Board on a voice vote approved a motion by Third district member Jim Beshearse to name the DCHS gym floor in honor of Coach Luna, who passed away in December at the age of 85.

“I have had a lot of people contact me about naming the gym floor at DeKalb County High School in honor of Coach Luna. I think his record of 516-179 is one that would be hard to beat,” said Beshearse.

Luna coached both boys and girls at DeKalb County High School from 1964-69, then began coaching the boys program only until 1984. His total record was 516-179.

In other business, Director of Schools Patrick Cripps updated the school board on personnel moves since last month.

Myron Rhody has been hired as the Transportation Supervisor.

Those granted a leave of absence are Trent Colwell, Josh Gulley, and Britney Gulley
