The Smithville Police Department is getting great community support in its effort to raise money for DeKalb Middle School Guidance Counselor Martha Melching who is seven months pregnant and was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
Chief Mark Collins said one businessman in particular, Dewain Hendrixson of DeKalb County Ace Hardware has pledged to match the donations raised by members of the Smithville Police Department in this year’s No-Shave November event.
Participating officers will be letting their beards grow in November as part of an annual nationwide cancer awareness campaign
This year’s observance locally will be in memory of the late Karen Jacobs and all proceeds will go to the Martha Melching Fund.
All officers who choose to participate will make a cash donation.
Chief Collins said he appreciates all donations for this cause and is especially grateful to Hendrixson for his pledge of support.
If any other business or individual would like to match funds raised by the police officers for this effort contact the Police Department at 615-597-8210.
“At some point in time almost everyone will personally know someone afflicted with cancer. It is a privilege to work alongside fellow officers who care enough to try to make a difference,” said Chief Collins.
As the participants let their beards grow, family and friends are encouraged to join the campaign and become more educated about cancer prevention, saving lives, and helping those fighting cancer.
“You will soon see some Smithville police officers that could use a shave, but it’s for a good cause,” said Captain Steven Leffew. “Many of our officers are very enthusiastic to take part in the fundraiser. I’m very proud to work beside such caring people,” he said.
