The Sons of Confederate Veterans will dedicate THE APOLLOS OF THE WEST HIKING TRAIL April 30 at 2 p.m. at the Short Mountain Bible Camp, 650 Bible Camp Road, Woodbury.
The trail is named to honor the memory of General Richard M. Gano who commanded the Confederate forces at the Battle of Snow Hill in April 1863. Following the war, General Gano returned to his private life in Texas. He was a minister of the Gospel and a capable businessman. He baptized thousands into Christ and became a successful rancher. His ranch holdings included land that now comprises Big Ben National Park on the Rio Grande River. His descendants include the aviation and film industry notable, Howard Hughes.
The public is welcome to the dedication which will be followed by a hike of the new trail. The trail is approximately one-half mile in length and requires strenuous effort in places. The surface is unimproved. Refreshments will be offered at the conclusion of the hike.
