At least two people may be seeking to succeed Doug Stephens on the DeKalb County Board of Education from the 6th District.

Billy Shawn Washer is the latest person to have picked up a petition to run for the seat in the August 6 DeKalb County General Election. Jason L. Miller has also obtained a petition.

The winner of the race in August will take over from Stephens who announced last week that he will not be a candidate for re-election after having served two terms.

In addition to the 6th district, the 5th district seat on the school board will be filled in the August election. W.J. (Dub) Evins, III currently holds that position. The terms are for four years.

The qualifying deadline is April 2.

Seven members make up the Board of Education but they do not all run in the same year because their four year terms are staggered. The 5th and 6th district positions are up for election this year. The other five were filled in 2018 and will be on the ballot again in 2022.
