Dorothy Jean Young

Dorothy Jean Young age 96 of Smithville, passed away at Tuesday morning at the Webb House in Smithville. She was born April 16, 1928, to her parents the late Harold Mason and Louvella Tittsworth. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Smoot Young, Sr.; sons, Billy Smoot “Bill” Young, Jr. and Joe Mason Young; sister, Bobbie Lynn Betty. Ms. Young was a faithful member of the Smithville Church of Christ and a homemaker. She is survived by daughter, Laura Lynn (John) Carter of McMinnville; grandchildren, Andrew (Trista) Carter, Caroline (Tyler) Cantrell, Matt (Brandi) Young, and Josh Young; great-grandchildren, Emberly and Ethan Carter, Carter, Parker, and Reese Cantrell, Destiny (Jesse) Hanley, Brianna Young, Kylie Young, Matt Young, Jr.; sister-in-law, Betty Sue Young. Graveside services will be 3 PM Thursday August 15, 2024, at DeKalb Memorial Gardens, with Billy Willingham and Bro. Dan Gulley officiating. There will be no visitation or services at the funeral home, family and friends will meet at the cemetery. In addition to flowers donations may be made to either the Smithville Church of Christ or Day School or the American Heart Association. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the Webb House and Gentiva Hospice for the loving care shown Ms. Young. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is honored to care for the Young family.




Robert “Bob” George Ley

Robert “Bob” George Ley age 94 of Smithville, passed away Sunday August 11, 2024, at NHC Healthcare in Smithville. He was born July 20, 1930, to his parents the late George and Ellen Campbell Ley. Mr. Ley was a member of the Smithville Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He and his wife served as missionaries for a few years. He was a CRNA and worked at DeKalb Hospital for many years. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Rosemarie Ley of Smithville; daughter, Brenda Van Cleave of Chattanooga; grandson, Michael Van Cleave; granddaughter, Shelly Van Cleave; brother, (Bill) William Ley of Henderson, KY; several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services will be held 1 PM Thursday August 15, 2024, at DeKalb Memorial Gardens with Pastor Dennis Clark officiating. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery, there will not be any services at the funeral home. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is honored to care for the Ley family.




Tommy Allen Taylor

Tommy Allen Taylor age 54 of the Statesville Community, died Saturday morning, Aug. 10, 2024 at his residence. Tommy was a 1987 graduate of Watertown High School, he and his wife, Garnette owned and operated the Statesville Market and operated Taylor Heating and Air for many years. Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Taylor in 2008. He is survived by his wife, Garnette Frazier Taylor; daughter, Leighanna (Joseph) McCutcheon; grandchildren, Piper Taylor, Cylus, Charlee and Kayne McCutcheon; his mother, Ann Ferguson and brother, Ronnie Taylor all of Statesville; his father and mother-in-law, Garlon and Ann Frazier of Liberty; aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024 at Hunter Funeral Home with Bro. Hunter Hay and Bro. Michael Hale officiating. Visitation 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. till service time on Wednesday. Pallbearers, Luke Flory, James Tidwell, Jeremy McPeak, Carlos Hamlet, Bobby Hamlet, Daniel Tyree. Joyce Mai “Granny” Satterfield

Joyce Mai “Granny” Satterfield age 82 of Smithville, passed away at her home Friday August 9, 2024. She was born October 10, 1941, to her parents the late, Hardy Blackman and Nettie Mae Edens Brewer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Ernest Satterfield; son, Scott Dwayne Satterfield and daughter, Beth White. Ms. Joyce was also affectionally known as Punkin. She was a member of Bethlehem Community Church and retired from Cumberland Swan Manufacturing. She is survived by children, Teresa (Jay) Harper of Orlinda, TN, Terry Satterfield of Smithville, Mike Satterfield of Smithville, Josh (Bethany) Satterfield of Smithville, Jason (Ashley) Satterfield of Murfreesboro, Debra Thompson of Lafayette; grandchildren, Jacob Harper, Amanda Johnson, Jeremy White, Chris Troutt, Christy Herd, Ashley Satterfield, Tiffany Pulley, Cody Satterfield, Braxton Carter, Emily Satterfield, Aubree Satterfield, Cody Johnson, Tony Pack; 20 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Everette Brewer, Ronnie Brewer, and Freddy Brewer; sister, Sandra Cunningham; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be 12 Noon Monday August 12, 2024, at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Jeremy Poole and Michael Hale officiating with burial to follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Wallace Leon Johnson age 82 of Liberty, passed away Friday night August 9, 2024, at NHC Healthcare in Smithville. He was born August 4, 1942, to his parents the late Charles Franklin and Nonnie Bell Mathis Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Bryan Johnson and brother, Billy Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a member of Cave Springs Missionary Baptist Church and was a construction worker. He is survived by wife, Joyce Johnson of Liberty; children, David (Emily) Johnson of Murfreesboro, Kim (Michael) Riley of Sparta, Rhonda (Charlie) Caplinger of Smithville, Sissy Johnson Cooper of Smithville, Mandi Parker of McMinnville; 12 grandchildren, Dustin, Hayden, Holly, Kady, Nikki, Matthew, Jonathan, Michael, Jennifer, Colby, Braxton, Bryan; 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Judy Johnson of Liberty. Funeral services will be 3 PM Monday August 12, 2024, at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Elder Steven Brooks and Bro. Micheal Hale officiating and burial will follow in Salem Cemetery. Phyllis Mai Hallum of Smithville age 70 passed away Wednesday August 7, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Woodbury. She was born October 10, 1953, to her, mother, Gladys Cantrell and her late father Elmus “Tot” Cantrell. In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by a son, Jeremy Hallum; brother-in-law, Alan Bradford. Ms. Hallum was a member of Friendship The Baptist Church and worked as a Teachers Aid for more than 20 years for the DeKalb County Board of Education. She is survived by daughter, Stephanie (Scott) Moore of Woodbury; grandchildren, Wesley Hallum, Peyton Hallum, Conner Crabtree, Trey Crabtree, Blake (Emily) Moore, and Brooke Moore; great grandchildren, Blakely Moore, Ellie Moore, and Millie Moore; mother, Gladys Cantrell of Smithville; sister, Suzanne (Bill) Gash of Smithville; nieces Mandy (Paul) Talley, Rachel (Kieran) Russell; nephews, Cory (Samantha) Bradford, and Jordan (Erika) Gash; several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins also survive; special friend, Donna Knowles. Funeral services will be held Saturday August 10, 2024, at 3:00PM with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial to follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.
