George “Junebug” Roller, Jr.

50 year old George “Junebug” Roller, Jr. of Smithville passed away Friday at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital. He was a Baptist and a nurseryman. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Morris Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service at 2 p.m. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Anna Morris Rigsby. Survivors include his wife, Mary Atnip Roller of Smithville. Two children, George Roller, III and Abbey of Smithville and Molly Lawrence of Smithville. Three grandchildren, Aiden Lawrence, Ava Grace Roller, and Kase Bryson Roller all of Smithville. Father, George “Bo” and Mary Shirley Roller of McMinnville. A brother, Victor “Hopper” Roller and Annette of Smithville. A sister, Lynna Brittain and David of Shelbyville. Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, and friends also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in memory of George to help with funeral expenses.




James Glenn (Jim) Hicks, Jr.

April 16, 2019

Funeral services for James Glenn (Jim) Hicks, Jr. 79, of Cookeville will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ with Buddy Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Cemetery. Jim died Saturday after a brief illness.

He was born November 19, 1939 in Knoxville to the late Marie Williams and James Glenn Hicks.

Jim was a proud graduate and lifelong supporter of Tennessee Tech University. He was also a graduate of the LSU Graduate School of Banking and the School of the Tennessee Bankers Association, presently known as the Southeastern School of Banking.

Jim was a well-respected banker in Cookeville for 49 years. His genuine interest in his customers and dedication to service led to many cherished friendships. He began his banking career on the square at the old First National Bank. From there, he started American Bank and Trust which later became First American, then AmSouth Bank and currently Regions Financial. Later, he started Community Bank of the Cumberlands, which became SouthEast Bank where he retired as Senior Vice President and member of the Board of Directors.

Jim’s devotion and service to Tennessee Tech is unrivaled. He was a long-time member of the President’s Club and was a Chapter Advisor of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served on several TTU job search committees, including the search for the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. His service to the university was diverse and included the College of Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors, the Foundation for the Humanities Board of Directors, the Fine Arts Foundation Board of Directors, and the University Christian Center Advisory Board.

Jim was committed to the College of Business Administration Foundation, serving as President, Vice President, and Secretary of the Board of Trustees. He chaired several committees, including the Executive, Nominating, Fundraising, Finance, Selection, and served on the Scholarship Committee. Jim received the Louis Johnson Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2004. He was a supporter of the Tommy Lynn Executive Suite, in honor of his professional mentor. While at American Bank and Trust, he helped to arrange for the bank to support two annual scholarships for the College of Business.

Jim’s service continued in the community he loved. He was a Charter Member and President of the Cookeville Breakfast Rotary Club and the Cookeville Jaycees, Chair of the Putnam County Red Cross, March of Dimes, and the Cookeville/Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. He served as Treasurer of the Bryan Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors and Putnam County Friends of the Library. He was a 1996 graduate of Leadership Putnam and served on the Board of Trustees. Jim supported the Special Olympics, Boys and Girls States, Odyssey of the Mind, and various community and school sports teams. He served on the Advisory Board of Foster Grandparents, the Chance Project Council and the Upper Cumberland Friends of Scouting.

In honor of his commitment to scouting, Jim recently received the 2019 Good Scout Award at the Friends of Scouting Annual Luncheon.

Jim was a devout Christian who lived his life in service to others, serving as a long-time deacon at Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ.

Jim’s family was his greatest pride and joy. Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Evon Turner Hicks; son and daughter-in-law, Lee Turner and Katherine Borzcik Hicks and three grandchildren, Turner Beth, Trey Derrick, and Theodore Riley Hicks all of San Francisco, California, a sister, Joyce Hicks (Bob) Gaskins of Beaumont, Texas. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, James Glenn Hicks III (Trey).

Serving as pallbearers will be Fred Burton, David Draper, Ken Draper, Roger Johnson, Dr. Tom Lawrence, Thomas Lynn, Lane Moore, Bruce Plummer, Dan Rader, Daniel Rader IV, Jim Smith, Gary Strong, Dr. Jim Vaden, and Don Wolber. All bank employees that worked with Jim over the years will be honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and Tuesday from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ.

Donald Ray Sonner

April 15, 2019

92 year old Donald Ray Sonner of Liberty died Sunday at St. Thomas West, Nashville.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Smithville. Don joined the Navy at the age of 17 where he retired with 23 years service. After his retirement, he opened Sonner Real Estate in Smithville where he was the Owner/Broker for 45 years.  The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Dan Clayton will officiate and burial will be in the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Harrison Sonner and Elsie Bottles and a brother, Wilbur Sonner. Sonner is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nola Sonner. Children Donna Sonner and Donald Ray Sonner, Jr. A sister, Rowena Jean Brunner. Cousin, Norma and Ted Cotner and several nieces and nephews. Barbara Dean Arnold

Barbara Dean Arnold age 74 of Smithville, passed away Saturday morning, April 13, 2019 at NHC HeathCare Center in Smithville.  She was born May 6, 1944 to her parents, the late Arthur Bell and Clara Bell Atnip In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Arnold; 2 sisters, Joyce Spurlock and Eva Hill; 3 brothers, Paul, Vernon and Roy Hendrixson.  Barbara Dean was a member of the Indian Creek Baptist Church, Homemaker, longtime volunteer with the American Red Cross and the Secretary for the Patients Council at NHC.  She is survived by 1 sister, Anna Ruth (Jack) Chidester of White Bluff; 2 brothers-in-law, Jerry Spurlock and Jimmy Arnold both of Smithville; 1 sister-in-law, Joan Hamilton of Smithville; niece, Pam (Mike) Baines of Smithville; great-niece and nephew, Emily (Josh) Linder of Norfolk, VA and Michael Paul White (Karla Gaddy) of Virginia Beach, VA; great-great-niece and nephew, Katie Linder and Wesley White.  Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Mike Carpenter and Ric Lee officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.  Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Wednesday 10:AM until the time of the service at 1 p.m.  The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to NHC HealthCare, Avalon Hospice, St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital and Dr. Kevin Rhody for the love and care shown to Barbara Dean.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Shirley Jean Weir Parker

Shirley Jean Weir Parker age 79 of Smithville, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, April 11, 2019.  Shirley was born July 29, 1939 to her parents, the late William Virgil and Geneva Baker Weir.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Parker and 1 brother, Virgil Weir.  She was a very faithful member of the Smithville First Baptist Church, Insurance Agent, she and her late husband owned and operated Smithville Builder’s Supply for many years.  Shirley enjoyed being a member of the Smithville Senior Citizens and was a former member of the Jaycettes. Her greatest accomplishments was being a precious mother and nana.  She leaves to cherish her memory, children, Sandy (Brent) Russell, Shelby (Joey) Reeder, Charlie (Joy) Parker and Sara Parker all of Smithville; grandchildren, Chris (Sarah) and Erik Russell, Paige (Byron) Adcock, Claire Garrett, Katie Parker; great-grandchildren, Brantley, Brayden, Anastyn, Sydney, Stella, Lakelynn and Summer; 1 sister, Sharon Ingle of Florida; sister-in-law, Audrey (Donald) Owens of Lebanon; several nieces, nephews and extended family.  Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Chad Ramsey, Bro. Larry Green and Bro. Donna Bell

April 9, 2019

71 year old Donna Bell of Murfreesboro passed away Friday at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital. She was a Baptist, an Usher Board member at Prosperity Baptist Church and she was retired from Westinghouse. The funeral will be  Wednesday, April 17 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Pastor Michael Alley, Sr. will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 16 from 4-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the service at 2 p.m.  She was preceded in death by brothers, Edward Lauderdale and Charles Lauderdale. She is survived by two daughters, Delia Lauderdale and Terra Bell both of Murfreesboro. Four grandchildren, Nicole Bell, Brent Lauderdale, Christian Seay, and Devin Lauderdale all of Murfreesboro. One great grandchild, Brent Lauderdale, Jr. of Murfreesboro. One sister, Elma Jean Hudson of Nashville. Ex-husband, William Lee Bell, Jr. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
